Man Utd land unwanted feat in Atalanta clash

Manchester United land unwanted milestone as Atalanta hit two first half goals

October 20, 2021 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Red Devils hit another low in Wednesday night's clash with Atalanta.

Manchester United were made to pay for their defensive frailities once more in Wednesday night's UEFA Champions League meeting with Atalanta. The Red Devils were put on the backfoot in the encounter after conceding two first half goals, landing an unwanted milestone in the process.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side approached the game looking for a positive response after their recent poor run fueled agitation among the club's fanbase. However, they saw Atalanta adding more insult to injury by successfully breaking the deadlock through Mario Pasallc in the 15th minute. 13 minutes later, Gian Piero Gasperini's side doubled its advantage through Merih Demiral.

Atalanta's first goal meant that for the first time since February 1964, Manchester United have failed to keep a clean sheet in 12 consecutive home games in all competitions - the club's longest such run. The two goals scored in the first 28 minutes was the also the earliest the Red Devils found themselves 2-0 down at Old Trafford in a UEFA Champions League match since October 2012.
