The Uruguayan striker inspired a remarkable turnaround for La Liga's defending champions who were on the brink of recording their first defeat of the season.

La Liga defending champions Atletico Madrid staged a dramatic comeback to defeat Getafe 2-1 at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez in Tuesday night's encounter. The Spanish capital club had Luis Suarez to thank for the remarkable turnaround as the Uruguayan forward managed to hit two late goals to propel them right back to the top of the league table.

Although Getafe have struggled for form this term, they did not make life easy for Diego Simeone's men who approached the game on the back of a 0-0 draw with Athletic Club in their previous outing. After keeping the visitors at bay for the most part of the first half, Stefan Mitrovic broke the deadlock right in the 45th minute to hand the host the lead ahead of the break.

Atletico's game in the second half was characterized by a flurry of attacks but they were still unable to break down Michel's charges. In the 74th-minute, a reckless tackle on Matheus Cuhna by Alena, however, proved to be the Achilles heel of the host as the on-loan Barcelona midfielder was subsequently sent-off after the match referee had reviewed the incident on the pitchside monitor.

Four minutes after Getafe were reduced to 10 men, Luis Suarez drew the game level with a poacher's finish by marginally beating an offside trap. In the 90th minute, the former Barcelona and Liverpool superstar headed home Sime Vrsaljko's cross to give Atletico Madrid the lead and eventually steal the maximum three points for Los Rojiblancos.
