Bundesliga Round-up after Sept. 19 games

Bundesliga Round-up: Bayern take top spot after Wolfsburg slip-up

September 20, 2021 By Oscar Rojas
The Bavarian side claimed an emphatic win last Saturday that helped them rise to the first place in the competition this weekend.

We have witnessed five weeks of action in the Bundesliga, and things have returned to their usual flow after Bayern's leap to the top spot in the league. If that was not interesting enough, the race to become the top scorer in this competitive league is wide open between two of the best strikers in the world.

During the past weekend we saw the former leaders slip up and hand their top spot to Bayern, while things kept heating up between the rest of the teams among the top five places. If things continue their current course, it seems that we could have one of the best Bundesliga seasons in recent history on our hands!

Without further ado, here are the main talking points after Matchday 5 in the Bundesliga.

Who are the top five Bundesliga teams for the 2021-22 season after Matchday 5?

Bayern claimed the top spot in the league for the first time this season after an emphatic win over Bochum. That was only possible for Julian Nagelsmann's men after Wolfsburg were only able to draw against Eintracth Frankfurt during Sunday's lat kickoff game. Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund's goalscoring machine claimed a 4-2 victory over Union Berlin thanks to a stellar performance by Erling Haaland.

Bundesliga top 3 scorers

This year's top scorer race in the German top-tier will seemingly become a two-men race, as Erling Haaland and Robert Lewandowski are going toe-to-toe each week to claim the top spot. Right now, both players are level with seven goals, and the battle between the seasoned veteran and the young lion will surely be one of the highlights of the competition.

Bundesliga – Top headlines

  • Lewandowski reaches one more milestone in 7-0 blowout vs Bochum - Once again, all headlines were dominated by Bayern's win over Bochum, with striker Robert Lewandowski's new record for most consecutive games scoring at least once for Die Roten. Will the Polish ace improve his goalscoring record from last season? Judging by his deeds in these games, we have to be inclined on thinking about it!

  • Haaland keeps adding fans with goalscoring prowess - The prolific Borussia Dortmund striker is level with "Lewa" in the goalscoring department, but his goalscoring skills have taken the Bundesliga unguarded. This weekend, Haaland reached 68 Bundesliga goals in 67 games with Dortmund, which means that if he can keep up this kind of performances, he could reach 100 goals in this league faster than any other player in league history.

  • Leverkusen boss aims dig at big-money spenders - Spanish sporting director Fernando Carro slammed teams such as PSG or Manchester City for spending big money on signing one or two players. Carro hinted that German teams did not suffer economical problems due to the COVID-19 pandemic due to their opposition to "go crazy by signing a player such as Messi" for a massive amount of money. Would it have been a waste of money to have that kind of talent around? It seems that the German top-tier is in fine health without such players...

Top matches to watch in the Bundesliga on Sept. 24-26, 2021

Greuther Furth vs Bayern München: Die Roten recently slammed Bochum with a 7-0 display, and fate had them scheduled to play Greuther Fürth, the other recently promoted team next. Can we expect the same kind of pummeling as we witnessed last Saturday at the Allianz Arena? Judging by the hosts' numbers in their Bundesliga run so far, we'd encourage you to bet on it.

Hoffenheim vs Wolfsburg: The Wolves lost the top spot due to an untimely draw against Frankfurt, which means that Mark Van Bommel's men will want to go back to winning ways when they drop by Hoffenheim's stadium. The hosts have not won any of their last four games, which may seem as a good sign for the green and white side ahead of this trip.

Borussia Mönchengladbach vs Borussia Dortmund: Die Fohlen have lost three of their last four, conceding nine goals in the season. Facing one of the top scoring teams in the tournament, with Erling Haaland among them seems like a recipe for disaster, and it seems like a proper game for Dortmund to keep up their pursuit of those who are one point ahead of them.
