Manchester United’s Alex Ferguson has confirmed that the club will not spend “stupid money” like billionaire rivals Manchester City during the summer transfer window.
Manchester City’s English Premier League title triumph on Sunday meant that Ferguson failed to offer silverware to Manchester United in the 2011/12 campaign. The 2008 Champions League winning coach is expected to revamp his squad ahead of the upcoming season.

“We invest in young players. That is what we are good at – we're not like other clubs who can spend fortunes on proven goods,” Alex Ferguson told the press on Tuesday as he spoke about Manchester United’s transfer plans.

“We know that City are going to spend fortunes, pay stupid money, pay silly salaries and all that. We can't do anything about that.

“We concentrate on what we can do to try to bring players in for the right reasons.

“We invest in players who will be with the club for a long time, who will create the character of the club, who will create excitement for our fans, and we are very proud of that and we are going to continue that way.”

Last summer, Alex Ferguson spent more than 32 million pounds on ex-Atletico Madrid goalkeeper David de Gea and former Aston Villa winger Ashley Young.
