The Portuguese forward was finally handed his award for scoring the most goals at the summer's tournament.

Cristiano Ronaldo was presented the EURO 2020 top scorer award ahead of Wednesday night's FIFA World Cup qualifier. The 36-year-old forward won the gong at this summers tournament by scoring five goals and providing an assist from just 391 minutes of action.

Although the Seleccao were eliminated from the European championship in the Round of 16, only Czech Republic attacker Patrik Schick managed the same number of goals as the Manchester United striker. However, the fact that he provided a single assist won him the tie-breaker to win the Golden Boot outrightly. Three of his goals came from the penalty spot, whereas the other two came from open play against Hungary and Germany.

In what was Portugal's fourth game of their European's World Cup qualifying campaign, the striker was handed the award. However, his night started off on a rather bad note after he missed a penalty-kick which was won by his new club teammate Bruno Fernandes. Ireland's goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu guessed the right way to stop the former Juventus star's effort before John Egan put the underdogs ahead by opening the scoring on the stroke of half time.

A mini-debate emerged on social media as a result of Ronaldo's mishap with some Manchester United fans suggesting that the former Juventus must not be put on penalty duties despite his remarkable scoring record from the spot. Currently, Bruno Fernandes is the designated penalty-taker for the Old Trafford outfit and it remains to be seen whether he will be stripped off his privileges following the arrival of his national team skipper.
