The early hours of Saturday saw Brazil kick off their Gold Medal match in Tokyo 2020's Men's Football Tournament. The Selecao, having overcome Mexico in the semifinals, were pitted against Spain in the ultimate showdown.
The South Americans entered this competition as the defending champions, having won gold four year back at Rio 2016, and kicked off this clash eager to retain their accolade. The game was initially a cagey affair, but in the final 15 minutes of the first half, we were treated to a controversial moment.
After an intervention from VAR, Brazil were awarded a fortunate penalty and a golden opportunity to take the lead. Unai Simon was deemed to have fouled Matheus Cunha in the box with his attempt to collect a cross, a decision several fans disagreed with, and Richarlison wasted no time in stepping up for the spot kick.

Unfortunately, stepping up to take a penalty is one thing; actually converting it is another. After an unusual run-up, the Everton attacker blasted his attempt over the crossbar and was left red-faced, setting an unwanted Tokyo 2020 feat along the way. Watch his miss in the tweet below (video is geo-restricted).

2 - Brazil are the only team to have lost two penalties in the Men's Football tournament at #Tokyo2020. Matheus Cunha against Germany in the opening round and Richarlison against Spain in the final. Wayward.

Richarlison hammers a penalty kick over the bar! Huge moment. Penalty awarded after a VAR review as Unai Simon punched Cunha in the face. Seemed a bit harsh. Still 0-0.

Fortunately for Richarlison, Cunha, the man who had won the penalty, saved his team-mate the blushes by giving Brazil a 1-0 lead right before the half-time whistle. However, that advantage did not last long and by the hour mark, the Spaniards had drawn level courtesy of a fantastic Mikel Oyarzabal goal.
