The USA men's national team will kick off the Gold Cup in Kansas City by taking on Haiti in a Group B clash.

Preview

USA opens the 2021 Gold Cup tournament against 2019 semifinalists Haiti on Sunday inside the Children's Mercy Par in Kansas City. Having lost the missed out on winning the last edition against Mexico, the Star and Stripes are poised to hit the ground running in their first game of the competition. A lone goal scored by Jonathan dos Santos was soiled the plans of the North American powerhouse to hand his side their eight title.

There have been a few changes since the USA was met with the ill-fate, with a new generation now ready to make a claim for their country's third title from the last five editions. In terms of preparations, Gregg Berhalter have been put through their paces adequently, having racked up eight wins and a draw across their last 10 matches in all competitions.

The Yanks have won all of their last seven matches played against teams in the CONCACAF region, including a a remarkable victory against Mexico in the CONCACAF Nations League final. Against this backdrop, they will go into Sunday's clash soaring in confidence and with the belief that they will secure another qualification to the final of the Gold Cup for a third successive time.

For Haiti, they will be eager to put the disappointment of being eliminated from World Cup qualifying by Canada behind them when they take on the USMNT. The are set for an eighth Gold Cup appearance, and Les Grenadiers will hope to build on last week's 4-1 win over Bermuda that secured for them a spot at the finals.

They come into the contest unbeaten in their last two games, despite picking up back to back defeats against Canada in a couple of meetings earlier. In the two wins, the scored 10 goals and conceded only two. Against the United States of America, Jean-Jacques Pierre will hope to get the opener to tilt the good omen in their favor. So far, they have won their last five games in which they have scored first. On the contrary, they have failed to secure a win their last six fixtures where they have conceded the opening goal.

That withstanding, the objective for Haiti will be to try and finally end a lengthy losing run against the USA and there will not be a better time to pull it off than in their first game of the Gold Cup.

Team news

The USMNT practically has a host of its top stars missing the Gold Cup following the decision of the manager to rest them. The likes of Christian Pulisic, Zack Steffen, Giovanni Reyna and Josh Sargent are all unavailable for the encounter.

On the contrary, Haiti should have all their top talents present for the clash.
