Italian champions AC Milan miss out on the opportunity to overtake Serie A league leaders Juventus after being stunned by Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico.
The Rossoneri squandered a glorious opportunity to leapfrog Serie A league leaders Juventus after falling to a frustrating 2-0 defeat to Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday.

Massimiliano Allegri's side conceded goals from Hernanes and Tommaso Rocchi in the final thirteen minutes of the match to sink to their fourth defeat of the season.

Milan pushed to the attack immediately from the kick-off and almost took an early lead but a goal-bound header from midfielder Antonio Nocerino was denied by a remarkable save from Lazio goalkeeper Federico Marchetti.

While Lazio occasionally looked dangerous when moving to the attack, the visitors dominated proceedings and missed a series of opportunities to open the scoring.

Both Stephan El Shaarawy and Zlatan Ibrahimovic were very wasteful when presented with chances to find the back of the net, as both sides went into the break level.

At the beginning of the second half it appeared that Milan were awarded a penalty when Andre Dias handled the ball in the area, but while referee Antonio Damato pointed to the spot his assistant overruled the decision.

Lazio gradually picked up their game as the half progressed, and they searched for possible openings against a Milan side who began to look rather fragile in their defence.

In the 77th minute Lazio took a surprise lead when Alvaro Gonzalez and Rocchi combined to set-up Hernanes, who beat Christian Abbiati with a clinical finish.

Minutes later the Brazilian international almost put the Romans two-up, but he flashed the ball inches wide when he had the goal at his mercy.

However, five minutes from full-time Rocchi sealed Lazio the victory when he rushed onto a Senad Lulic cut-back with a powerful finish.
