Morata misses decisive penalty

Morata misses decisive penalty as Jorginho secures Italy's EURO 2020 final spot

July 6, 2021 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Spanish striker went from being a hero to the villian in a matter of minutes as his side crashed out of the European championship.

Spain disappointingly crashed out of the 2020 European Championship after losing on penalties against Italy on Tuesday night. La Roja had their elimination confirmed after Jorginho scored the final penalty to secure a 4-2 win for his side moments after Alvaro Morata had failed to keep his side in the game with a missed attempt.

On the balance of play, the Spaniards were slighty ahead but it was the Italians who kept their nerve and pulled through in the end. Following a goalless first half, the Azzurri were set on course to a triumphant night by Federico Chiesa's brilliant curler in the 60th minute. But the celebrations were postponed after substitute Alvaro Morata hit the equalizer for La Roja with just 10 minutes of regular time to play.

Spain proved to be dominant in the second half as well but the resolve of Italy remained intact, forcing the game to be decided on penalties. Manuel Locatelli had the first kick of the night saved by Unai Simon but Dani Olmo failed to give the Spaniards the edge by blasting his attempt over the bar. With Belotti, Gerard Moreno, Bonucci, Thiago Alcantara and Bernardeschi all scoring in succession, Alvaro Morata stepped up and missed his attempt, paving the way for Jorginho to fire the Italians to the finals with the final kick.

With the result, Italy extended their unbeaten run across all competitions to 33, two matches away from equalling the all-time record held by Spain and Brazil. On the contrary, the Spaniards failed to progress from a semi-final of a major tournament (World Cup/Euros) for the first time in their history, having previously reached the final in each of their previous five semi-final appearances.
