Goalkeeper Unai Simon became the cornerstone of Spain's win due to his performance in the penalty shootout.

Spain had to suffer quite a bit to make the semi-finals of the UEFA Euro for the first time since 2012, but while doing it they managed to make history for La Roja in the continental competition.

Luis Enrique's team took the lead during the first half of the game, but a goal by Xherdan Shaqiri forced the extra time to be played. Switzerland's defense, led by Yann Sommer, held on to a heroic one-all draw to force the penalty shootout, where Spain prevailed despite missing the first shot by Sergio Busquets.

The Spanish side made the most out of Unai Simon's goalkeeping skills, as the Athletic Club man denied Fabian Schär and Manuel Akanji's shots back-to-back, while Ruben Vargas sent his shot over the crossbar to give way for Spain's win. Dani Olmo, Gerard Moreno, and Mikel Oyarzábal score the game-winning goals for Spain in this nerve-wracking shootout.

Spain has prevailed in four of their five spot kick shootouts in the continental competition, but that in itself was not the only record La Roja accomplished today. The thing that can make Spanish fans proud also had to do with the team's win against Croatia in the previous round.
