Marco Reus recently committed his future to Borussia Dortmund. He might have made the right move; however Dortmund perhaps did not make the right choice.
According to Kicker magazine, Reus demanded a starting berth at Bayern. Bayern promised the attacker higher wages than Dortmund but was not willing to give the youngster a starting berth. As a result, Reus headed towards the club he represented as a youth player. His family lives there and this gave him yet another reason to head to the German Champions.

Dortmund parted with a sum of 17.5 million euros to bring the player to the club. The signing of Reus can be thought of as a tug of war between Bayern and Dortmund that Dortmund won. Yet, despite winning the battle, Dortmund might not be able to win the war.

Dortmund’s financial trouble is no secret. While trying to compete with Bayern year in year out, they splashed the cash at the beginning of the 2000’s. However, failure to qualify for the Champions League regularly meant that Dortmund failed to repay their debts. The club almost went bankrupt and had to be built from scratch.

For a few years, Dortmund was looked at as nothing more than just a mid-table club until Juergen Klopp came in. He led them to sixth in 2009 in his first stint as head-coach of Dortmund. The Ruhr side improved further the following season before lifting the title last season.

The side that Dortmund currently has consists of players mostly from their youth academy. The purchased players were unproven and came at low prices such as Lucas Barrios. As a result, the Ruhr side might feel that they made the right chosen for dishing out a high amount for a proven star. But just how ‘proven’ is Marco Reus?

Reus’ name has been in the newspapers for about two seasons now. Last season, he was the star of Gladbach and ensured his club’s survival in the Bundesliga. This season, Reus has scored some spectacular goals- his brilliance has seen his club rise to fourth. Some even wonder how Gladbach will survive without Reus even though Gladbach has held their own in matches without Reus.

Yet, there is no guarantee that a star of Gladbach will make it in a ‘bigger’ club. Lukas Podolski failed at Bayern when he moved from Köln. Marko Marin stagnated at Bremen following his move from Gladbach.

If Reus fails as Ilkay Guendogan did, Dortmund will pay a heavy price for this transfer. Also, Dortmund might have chosen to make the transfer later due to the fact that Reus did not intend to move to Bayern.

Dortmund is doing quite well in the Bundesliga with the team they possess to say the least. Champions League qualification for next season is almost guaranteed. They didn’t need to make this signing now. They could have waited for another season after garnering more funds.

This move on the other hand could turn out to be a big success due to Dortmund’s style of play. Reus might just be the perfect player to score from the counter-attacks that Dortmund launch. The sale of some players such as Barrios could cover up the amount spent to buy Reus as well.

Reus has an important assignment tomorrow as his team takes on Bayern. If Reus scores tomorrow, Dortmund might feel that they will have a star prepared to take the Champions League by storm next season.
