Racing Club rescue late draw against Estudiantes in Alfio Basile's first game back as coach.
With the return of Alfio Basile as head coach, Racing Club fought out a 1-1 draw with Estudiantes de La Plata, in the inaugurating match of the Copa Cuidad de Mar del Plata at the Jose Maria Minella stadium on Tuesday.

Guido Carrillo put Estudiantes ahead in the 26th minute of the second half, after fine work from Mauro Fernandez, but Colombian international Teofilo Gutierrez snatched Racing a well-deserved point in second-half stoppage-time.

The match marked the return of Basile as the coach of La Academia, but although his team picked up a draw, three of his key players, Gabriel Hauche, Agustin Pelletieri and Giovanni Moreno suffered injury setbacks.

"We trained like beasts for six days and today you could notice how tired we were, with the lack of reaction and distance," stated Basile, who commenced his fifth stint at the Avellaneda club.

The former Argentina national team coach also indicated that those players who left the field due to injury did so "for precaution" and were not seriously injured.

Basile fielded Racing's strongest possible side, but although they were up against a relatively young Estudiantes side, who were missing the likes of captain Juan Sebastian Veron, Gaston Fernandez and Mauro Boselli, they couldn't gain supremacy.

Racing, who finished in second-place of the Argentine Apertura championship last year, are expected to be one of the main candidates to fight for the Clausura championship.
