Manchester City vs. Arsenal, one of the most important games of the 2023-24 Premier League season, is finally here! For the second year in a row, these two English heavyweights are going toe-to-toe for the coveted title, with Liverpool making this a three-horse race, meaning this Etihad Stadium battle, scheduled for 11:30 a.m. ET on Sunday, could go a long way in deciding who is crowned the champion.

Pep Guardiola's men boast the home advantage and while they are not the more in-form team out of the two, many see the Cityzens as the favorites to win. The reason is simple: Manchester City have not lost a league game at the Etihad Stadium against the Gunners in nearly a decade.

The last time the reigning English champions were beaten at home against Arsenal was way back in January 2015, with fan favorite Santi Cazorla putting in a dazzling display, scoring the opener before assisting Olivier Giroud for the second.

Since then, Manchester City have won all but one of the subsequent eight showdowns with the North London heavyweights. In fact, Guardiola has only lost once in the league to his former assistant Mikel Arteta and that was the 1-0 defeat in the trip to the Emirates Stadium earlier this campaign.

Last season's Etihad Stadium showdown between these two clubs was one of the major catalysts behind Arsenal's title collapse. Manchester City hosted Saka and Co. last term with a five-point deficit to overturn and tore them apart, winning 4-1 thanks to a masterclass from Kevin de Bruyne and Erling Haaland which swung the tide in their favor.

Guardiola's men went on to win the Premier League before completing the treble and will be looking to repeat this feat. However, this Arsenal is not the same Arsenal of last season and Haaland and Co. are yet to hit the heights of 2022-23.

The hosts have not lost a top-flight game since December 6 but have dropped points in two separate games in 2024. Furthermore, Pep's crew enter this fixture with a handful of injury concerns, and while the gap separating his team and the current league leaders is merely one point, a home defeat could be a huge blow in this exciting three-horse title race.

Arsenal, meanwhile, enter this tie with two aims: to keep hold of the top spot and to exorcise their past demons. While Arteta's men are a point ahead of third-placed Manchester City at the top of the table, the Gunners' closest rival in the standings are Liverpool, who are level on points — but behind on goal difference — with the North London giants.

Jurgen Klopp's men face Brighton on Sunday but kick off that fixture two and a half hours earlier, meaning Arsenal could drop to second in the table before they kick a ball. Victory at the Etihad Stadium would render Liverpool's result meaningless.

However, beating Manchester City on their turf is one of the most difficult feats in world football. The away side's Etihad Stadium struggles are well documented but Arteta is not alone in this, with Klopp, Pep's fabled rival, never managing to beat Guardiola on the road in the Premier League — the German has won twice away to the Cityzens, once in the UEFA Champions League and once against Manuel Pellegrini.

Additionally, the memory of last season's 4-1 loss will likely weigh heavily on Mikel's mind. According to reports, that result played a huge part in the club's summer transfer strategy, with Arsenal signing Kai Havertz and Declan Rice, two completely different midfielders who have still contributed heavily to making the Gunners the best defense in the country.

This is an area the visitors should draw confidence from. Not only have the North London giants conceded the fewest goals in the league this campaign but they also boast the least xGA (expected goals against) and have faced the fewest shots in the competition.

Furthermore, when these two sides met at the Emirates Stadium in early October, Declan Rice, William Saliba, and Gabriel Magalhães put in a commanding performance at the back and limited Haaland and Co. like no other team before. Kevin de Bruyne and Rodri, who missed that earlier clash due to injury and suspension respectively, will be back for this tie but it should be noted that Arsenal are the most in-form team in the league in 2024.

The Gunners are the only club to have won every single top-flight game this calendar year, winning eight in a row since the New Year, scoring a whopping 33 goals while conceding only four.

This includes huge victories over Crystal Palace, West Ham, Sheffield United, and Burnley while securing a crucial 3-1 triumph over title rivals Liverpool. While the visitors are not guaranteed a win at the Etihad Stadium, this all points to one thing: Manchester City vs. Arsenal will be a nail-biting showdown.

Team news

Manchester City: Guardiola has suffered a huge blow as both Kyle Walker and John Stones have been ruled out for this fixture due to injuries they picked up during the recent international break. Ederson, who suffered a muscle injury on the trip to Anfield, is a doubt for this tie but Manuel Akanji and Kevin de Bruyne, who were dealing with their own fitness issues, should be available for this tie. Jack Grealish is also back but the Englishman is unlikely to start ahead of Jeremy Doku.

Arsenal: Arteta has his own concerns as Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka, two of his best attackers, are racing against the clock to be fit. The Brazilian winger suffered a foot injury in the 6-0 win over Sheffield and has not featured since while his Englishman teammate withdrew from the national team due to a minor muscle issue. Gabriel Magalhães also withdrew from Brazil due to an issue of his own but the trio are expected to be available for this tie. Thomas Partey and Takehiro Tomiyasu, meanwhile, built up their fitness during the international break, meaning Jurrien Timber could be Arsenal's only absentee for this fixture.
