The semi-finals of the 2024 CONCACAF W Gold Cup gets underway on Wednesday, March 6th.

And then there were four. On Wednesday, the semi-finals of the inaugural CONCACAF W Gold Cup gets underway, with four teams all taking part. Three of the teams: USWNT, Canada, and Mexico are all part of CONCACAF, while CONMEBOL's sole representative will be Brazil.

Here is all you need to know.

The first of the semi-finals double header will be starring Brazil and Mexico. Both teams have had a very strong CONCACAF W Gold Cup so far, and the winner of this clash will face either Canada or the USWNT in the final on March 10th. Brazil come into this game having cruised to a 5-1 win over fellow CONMEBOL side Argentina in the quarter-finals, which makes it four wins in four games for the Selecao in this competition, with the goal conceded against Argentina being the first for them so far.

Meanwhile, Mexico have been quite impressive in this tournament, with a 2-0 win over the USWNT arguably one of their best performances to date. La Tri come into this contest having battled to a 3-2 win over Paraguay in the quarter-finals and overall are unbeaten in their last 22 matches across all competitions heading into Wednesday's match. Notably, Mexico's two goal conceded in their recent win over Paraguay are not only the first time La Tri have conceded in this competition, but marks the first in eight games across all competitions.

Brazil and Mexico are no strangers to each other, and Wednesday's meeting will be the 18th clash featuring these two sides. The Selecao have enjoyed more success in past matches, with 14 wins versus Mexico's two (one draw), but it is safe to assume that given how Mexico recently ended a long-standing losing streak against the USWNT, Brazil will not be taking their next opponents lightly.

Following what should be an entertaining match starring Brazil and Mexico, all eyes will certainly be on part two of Wednesday's double-header featuring fellow CONCACAF teams and neighboring nations Canada and the USWNT.

It is no surprise that Canada and the USWNT have been well acquainted for decades, although it's the Stars and Stripes who have enjoyed the bulk of success against their northern neighbors. The two have faced each other at eight different CONCACAF W Championships, and every single one of those matches have been won by team USA.

However, could the dynamic be shifting? Canada come into this match having beaten Costa Rica 1-0 in the quarter-finals. It wasn't the prettiest of victories, but Bev Priestman's squad got the job done. The victory means that Canada have won their last seven matches across all competitions sans conceding a goal. At this year's CONCACAF W Gold Cup, they have been in control throughout, notably scoring a whopping 13 goals during their group stage campaign with three wins over El Salvador (6-0), Paraguay (4-0), and Costa Rica (3-0).

Meanwhile, the USWNT found redemption as they eased to a 3-0 win over Colombia to book their spot in the final four. There certainly was a great deal of pressure on Team USA, who are hosting this tournament, following their 2-0 loss to Mexico on matchday three, and now, they will hope to use their confidence-boosting win as a spring board against Canada.

Although Team USA have lost just four times to Canada, they boasted an overwhelming advantage in their head to head record against Mexico - and ended up on the wrong side of the score-line. As such, while many will be expecting the USWNT to book a spot in the finals, where they will face either Brazil or have a reunion with Mexico, anything is truly possible as two familiar foes prepare to match wits on Wednesday evening.

Match facts: Canada vs USWNT

  • Canada have won their last seven matches across all comps sans conceding a goal
  • The USWNT have lost just two of their last 28 matches across all comps...
  • ...however, one of those defeats was to Mexico last month (2-0) that saw their long unbeaten streak in California come to an end
  • Canada have won just four times against the USWNT (D7 L53) in national history
