Preview

Manchester City resume their Premier League defense this midweek with an exciting showdown with Brentford. The Etihad Stadium will be the venue for this 2:30 p.m. ET fixture as Haaland and Co. aim to return to winning ways following their frustrating setback during the weekend.

The Cityzens enter this game on the back of their disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Chelsea. Thanks to that result, not only do Manchester City find themselves two points behind second-placed Arsenal but they are also now four points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Chelsea attacker Raheem Sterling came back to punish his former club by breaking the deadlock in the 42nd minute with a lovely goal against his ex-employers. Fortunately, Rodri rescued a point for the reigning champions with a late equalizer.

Guardiola's men have a game in hand. However, while City can leapfrog second-placed Arsenal if they win that game, they are no longer able to wrestle the number one spot away from Liverpool without a slip-up from Jurgen Klopp's side.

Regardless, Pep's side are still seen as the favorites to win the Premier League. While that draw was a small bump in the road, City remain unbeaten in their last 15 games across all competitions. To find their last defeat, one must go all the way back to December 6th when they were beaten 1-0  at Aston Villa.

Additionally, the hosts already met with Brentford earlier this month. Not only did Manchester City come away from that game with a win, but it was also a convincing victory, with Phil Foden grabbing a memorable hat trick and route to a three-nil triumph.

Brentford, on the other hand, will be looking for revenge when they visit the Etihad Stadium. However, Thomas Frank's side have not been performing well recently and will have to overcome the odds to beat the Cityzens.

The Bees have won only once in their last four games in the league, with that sole victory being a 2-0 triumph over Gary O'Neil's Wolves. Their most recent game, though, was a 4-1 thrashing at home to Manchester City's biggest rival Liverpool.

Toney and Co. faced an injury-plagued Liverpool, with Allison and Trent Alexander-Arnold missing the game while Diogo Jota and Curtis Jones picked up injuries inside the first half. Despite all of this, Brentford still suffered a humiliating loss at their very own Gtech Community Stadium.

With only two wins from their last 12 fixtures, it comes as little surprise to see Thomas Frank's side sitting only six points above the relegation zone. Nonetheless, the visitors should take confidence from their last trip to the Etihad Stadium.

The last time this West London club traveled to Manchester City, they came away with an unforgettable 2-1 triumph, with Ivan Toney grabbing a brace. Not only is Brentford's English striker back from suspension, but he has also been in sensational form, scoring a goal in all but one match since returning a month ago from his eight-month ban. Will he return to haunt Haaland and Co. once more?

Team news

Man City: Jack Grealish and Josko Gvardiol missed the draw with Chelsea and are not expected back for the next few weeks. However, Guardiola has no other concerns, with rotation being his only issue. As a result, Bernardo Silva and John Stones could return to the lineup.

Brentford: The visitors are without Ethan Pinnock and Bryan Mbuemo, which is a huge blow. Rico Henry, Josh Dasilva, Kevin Schade, and Aaron Hickey are also unavailable. However, Frank Onyeka and Yoane Wissa have both returned from the recent Africa Cup of Nations and made appearances in the defeat to Liverpool.

Key stats

  • Brentford have lost seven out of 11 away games in the Premier League this season.

  • Man City have won six of their eight home fixtures against the Bees, losing the other two.

  • However, the Cityzens' most recent Etihad Stadium showdown with Thomas Frank's men ended in a 2-1 loss, with Ivan Toney scoring twice while Foden got on the scoresheet.

  • The head-to-head record in this fixture favors Man City, but only slightly, with Guardiola's side winning 10 out of 18 encounters while Brentford have seven wins to their name.

  • Only once in those previous 18 clashes did these two teams play out a draw.
