The third round of the FA Cup is getting underway over the next few days. Here's all you need to know.

We've said goodbye to 2023 and hello to 2024 - and football has hardly taken a pause.

The third round of the FA Cup gets underway this week, with plenty of big games you will not want to miss.

Here's all you need to know.

When does the third round of the FA Cup start and end?

The third round of the 2023/24 FA Cup kicks off on Thursday, January 4th and ends on Monday, January 8th.

How teams are left in the FA Cup ahead of the third round?

A total of 64 teams are left in the FA Cup ahead of the third round. Maidenstone United, who play in the sixth tier, are the lowest-ranking team still afloat at this juncture.

Are there any big teams left in the competition? Who will they be playing?

All six of England's "Big Six" are still very much involved in the competition, with Tottenham, Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal, and Liverpool all playing over the next few days. Every single one of the Premier League's 20 teams begin their journey at this juncture, alongside 24 teams from the Championship.

Tottenham vs Burnley - Friday, January 5th

First up will be Tottenham, who are the natural favorites against a Burnley side who have struggled for good results this season. The two sides have already met in Premier League play, with Spurs cruising to a 5-2 win thanks to a brilliant hat-trick from Son Heung-min to help propel the team to the top of the league table. Ange Postecoglou's men did see their form take a major hit as injuries started to pile up, but have seemingly turned things around with four wins from their last five matches.

The same can't be said about Burnley, who are floundering in 19th spot. Certainly, Vincent Kompany will have his work cut out for him in order to stave off relegation, and he will know that his side are the huge underdogs in this contest. However, the FA Cup has thrown up plenty of surprises in the past. Will Friday's game be one of them?

Chelsea vs Preston North End - Saturday, January 6th

Despite a new man on the bench, things have not been exactly smooth sailing for Chelsea this season. The Blues are indeed still suffering from a major case of the Blues, as despite winning three of their last five Premier League games, Mauricio Pochettino's team are still barely into the top half of the table - let alone in any position to compete for European football next term. However, they still will be expected to get the job done in their upcoming FA Cup tie, which will see them host second-tier side Preston North End at Stamford Bridge this Saturday.

Manchester City vs Huddersfield Town - Sunday, January 7th

On paper, this looks like a David vs Goliath clash. Of course, as in the Biblical tale, David did beat Goliath, so naturally, despite being the overwhelming favorites to progress, Manchester City obviously will not be taking this game too lightly. Pep Guardiola will be well aware of the major upsets that happen in domestic cup competitions, and after winning their first ever Club World Cup, Manchester City, who are the reigning champions, will not want to have any slip-ups as they aim to take another step towards adding yet another title to their growing collection.

City are missing quite a few players due to injuries, but may be welcoming some of their key personnel back in some capacity, including Kevin de Bruyne and Erling Haaland. As for Huddersfield, this match comes at a really tough time for the Terriers, who come into this game having won just one of their seven matches in December and kicked off 2024 with a heavy 4-1 loss to Leicester City.

Arsenal vs Liverpool - Sunday, January 7th

Given the form of both teams in the Premier League this season, this game would have made a dynamic final as both teams are in the hunt for the Premier League title. However, Arsenal's form leaves some major doubts ahead of this contest, as the Gunners ended 2023 on a foul note with back to back losses and just one win in their last five Premier League games. That has seen Mikel Arteta's team slide back down to fourth spot, and will surely leave them with a lot of work to do to regain some of the lost ground on upcoming opponents Liverpool.

Meanwhile, the Reds have surged to the top of the table and will be confident of their chances of heaping more frustration on an Arsenal side who appear to be in a funk as of late. Unlike the Gunners, Liverpool have been in great form, winning both their last game of 2023 and their first match of 2024 to help them open up a three point gap over surprise package Aston Villa.

Wigan vs Manchester United - Monday, January 8th

It's safe to say that Manchester United will be desperate for a good result when they travel to face third-tier side Wigan Athletic on Monday in the final game of the FA Cup third round. Erik ten Hag's team come into this contest currently in eighth place in the league and have lost five of their last eight games across all competitions.

Despite this, Red Devils fans will hope that the team's upcoming game against Wigan will prove to the the spark Manchester United desperately need to turn over a new leaf this year. Will the struggling English giants make amends starting with this upcoming game? Or will Wigan deal them another huge blow as ten Hag battles for his future at Old Trafford?
