Preview

Arsenal return to action this weekend for their final game of 2023, with the North London giants visiting Fulham in an interesting weekend showdown. The Gunners will want to end the calendar year on a high note but should be in for a tricky test at Craven Cottage.

Mikel Arteta's men entered Christmas top of the table after drawing 1-1 away to Liverpool. However, fast forward a few days later and the Gunners find themselves fourth in the table thanks to their first home defeat of the season and a handful of victories from their closest rivals.

Saka and Co. hosted West Ham during the midweek but despite boasting an excellent record against the Hammers and David Moyes in particular, the title contenders fell to a shocking 2-0 loss at the Emirates Stadium.

Not only was this Arsenal's first home defeat of the season, but it was also the first time they lost a Premier League home game against David Moyes. Regardless, Arsenal had several opportunities to pick up a point or all three but their profligacy in front of goal and shambolic defending cost them on the day.

That result leaves Arteta's men with only one win in five across all competitions, four of which came in the Premier League. With Manchester City beating Sheffield and Aston Villa overcoming Burnley on Saturday, the North London giants have now been leapfrogged by both and thus sit in fourth.

However, a win would take them top again, albeit only temporarily — current leaders Liverpool are not in action until Monday when they host Newcastle. As a result, anything but three points would be unacceptable for the visitors.

The last time Arsenal faced the Cottagers was on Matchweek 3 and the same issues that plagued them in the West Ham defeat were visible then, proving that Thursday's result was no mere fluke. Mikel's side conceded a comical early goal, missed several opportunities but still clawed back to a 2-1 lead, but then drew 2-2 thanks to another lapse of defensive concentration.

However, the visitors are not the only ones desperate for a win given Fulham's recent form. Unlike Arsenal, who enter this game on the back of a midweek defeat only, the hosts enter this tie on the back of a three-game losing streak, a run which has seen them score nothing while conceding eight times.

This started in mid-December when they went 3-0 down at Newcastle, a frustrating but not-too-surprising result. However, things got worse from there, with Marco Silva's men losing 2-0 at home to relegation-battling Burnley before being beaten 3-0 away to Bournemouth.

Before this run, the Cottagers won back-to-back games by a 5-0 scoreline and came within minutes of beating Liverpool at Anfield. Nonetheless, Willian and Co. find themselves only six points above the relegation zone and while the alarm bells are not sounding off yet, the London side must stop their freefall as soon as possible.

While Fulham do not enjoy a lovely record against Arsenal, the same was true of West Ham and David Moyes. Furthermore, Silva's men are stronger at home, as most clubs are, and will look to their previous encounter with the Gunners for inspiration.

As mentioned earlier, the Cottagers grabbed a point despite being reduced to 10 men late in the game. Andreas Pereira and Joao Palhinha got on the scoresheet at the Emirates Stadium but things did not go as well the last time these two sides faced off at Craven Cottage.

Fulham suffered a 3-0 defeat after conceding to Gabriel Magalhães, Gabriel Martinelli, and Martin Odegaard in the first half, thus leaving the hosts with the desire for revenge.

Team news

Fulham: Adama Traore and Tim Ream are both sidelined while former Arsenal and Chelsea winger Willian remains a doubt. However, Raul Jimenez has served his suspension and is back available

Arsenal: Kai Havertz should return to the lineup after serving his one-match suspension. However, while Takehiro Tomiyasu was spotted back in training, the Japanese defender is unlikely to be involved in this game, thus remaining alongside Partey, Timber, and Vieira on the sidelines. Leandro Trossard, Emile Smith Rowe, and Reiss Nelson will be hoping for minutes in the face of Gabriel Martinelli's poor form.
