Preview

Tottenham is back in action in the Premier League as the North London heavyweights look to put an end to their dreadful form as of late. Unfortunately, Spurs face a tricky test on Sunday, hosting a Newcastle side also reeling from a recent defeat, as both clubs aim to return to winning ways in this highly-anticipated showdown.

Ange Postecoglou's men enter this clash on the back of their frustrating defeat at home to West Ham, with Tottenham once again throwing away a 1-0 lead to come away with nothing. Cristian Romero broke the deadlock for the North London outfit, but two second-half goals from Jarrod Bowen and James Ward-Prowse turned the score on its head and handed Son and Co. another defeat.

This was the fifth straight Premier League game that Spurs failed to win, a horrible run that began in early November when nine-man Tottenham lost 4-1 at home to Chelsea. Since then, Postecoglou's men have lost three additional games — they lost against West Ham, Wolves, and Aston Villa — while drawing 3-3 away to Man City.

As a result, they have plummeted from the top spot and are now fifth in the table with 27 points. Manchester United's embarrassing 3-0 loss at home to Bournemouth means Spurs remain in the top five, but Newcastle is only a point behind in seventh, meaning they could be leapfrogged if they suffer another home defeat.

The club is in the midst of an injury crisis, and given their recent results, fans have lamented Ange's inability to adapt to secure much-needed wins. However, speaking ahead of the game, the Australian tactician reiterated that his side will continue to play their attacking brand of football regardless of form.

"Nothing really changes, we stay the course," he told SpursPlay. "We want to set a standard in terms of the type of football we want to play and we're not going to waver on that.

As for Newcastle, they too head into this game with the aim of returning to winning ways. The Magpies have not been as bad as Spurs recently, but their most recent Premier League fixture ended in a 3-0 loss away to Everton.

Two errors in the build-up from Kieran Trippier gifted the Toffees their first two goals before Beto made it three. This result came just days after another confidence-boosting win for Eddie Howe's men, beating Manchester United 1-0 last weekend.

Anthony Gordon, who got the winner against Arsenal, scored the only goal of the game to build upon their 4-1 thrashing of Chelsea in the game before that. However, as is the case with Tottenham, Newcastle is in the midst of an injury crisis and will need to regroup quickly to overcome Tottenham.

Additionally, Isak and Co. will have an eye on their midweek showdown with AC Milan in the UEFA Champions League. The Premier League outfit will have the home advantage, but unless they beat the Serie A powerhouse at St. James' Park, their Champions League campaign will come to an abrupt end — though a draw would see them drop into the UEFA Europa League.

Team news

Tottenham: Son Heung-min did not look well when he came off in the defeat to West Ham but neither the club nor the manager has ruled him out for this game. Ivan Perisic, Manor Solomon, Ryan Sessegnon, James Maddison, Micky van de Ven, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Eric Dier are all sidelined. However, Pape Matar Sarr returned from injury in the West Ham defeat and could get a start in this game.

Newcastle: Nick Pope will sadly go under the knife after suffering a dislocated shoulder in the win over Man United. Sven Botman, Callum Wilson, Jacob Murphy, Dan Burn, Elliot Anderson, Joe Willock, Sean Longstaff, Harvey Barnes, and Matt Targett are all sidelined while marquee summer signing Sandro Tonali remains suspended over illegal betting.
