The 1998 World Cup winner has reinforced the Buenos Aires giants for the second half of the Argentine B Division.
Argentine heavyweights River Plate confirmed the signing of French striker David Trezeguet on Monday night. The former Juventus scoring-machine penned a two and a half year deal with Los Millonarios, with an option for a further year.

Trezeguet, 32, is the first new signing for River, however, he won't be the last, as the club board have decided that they will listen to the wishes of coach Matias Almeyda in bringing in a high-profile midfielder.

This player could either be Fernando Belluschi or Leonardo Ponzio, who are based in Portugal and Spain, respectively. Although there has been contact with both players talks are still premature.

Since leaving Argentina with Platense in 1995, Trezeguet went on to play for European clubs Monaco, Juventus and Hercules, before moving to the UAE for a brief stint with Baniyas. In 1998 Trezeguet helped France lift the FIFA World Cup for the first time. Two years later he scored France's winning goal as they became European champions.

Trezeguet always admitted that it would be a dream come true to end his career in Argentina, particularly if it was when wearing the prized shirt of River Plate.

River Plate, who finished the year in second-place of the Primera B Nacional, will start the preseason on January 4, as they attempt to return to the Argentine First Division midway through 2012.

In preseason competitions they will take on Estudiantes de La Plata, Racing Club and arch-rivals Boca Juniors twice, with the first meeting between Argentina's two biggest clubs scheduled for January 25 in Chaco, and the second for January 29 in Mendoza.
