The Frenchman has informed the club that he will not be extending his contract in 2024, meaning this will be his final year in Paris. Despite this, the player might remain at the Parc des Princes for 2023/24.

Kylian Mbappe looks set to dominate the summer transfer headlines after officially turning down the option to extend his PSG deal in 2024.

The Frenchman, who was a free agent last summer, agreed to remain with the French giants and put pen to paper on a three-year deal, which the club paraded in front of their fans. However, the third year of that three-year was mere an option, one that only Mbappe could trigger.

And with the player entering the final guaranteed year of his deal, the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner has officially decided against exercising that one-year clause, meaning he will be a free agent in the summer of 2024. This decision has left the Ligue 1 champions angry as the player allegedly leaked this information to L'Equipe before PSG were made aware and the deadline for that one-year extension is July 31, which means there was no reason to announce this decision this early.

While PSG were desperate to keep the player at the Parc des Princes, the Qatari-owned club do not want to lose the World Cup winner for free next summer and will push to get him out in this transfer window. According to ESPN, the French giants will demand a fee in the region of $161.5M and given the interest from Real Madrid, Los Blancos are already being tipped as the favorites.

However, Mbappe might not end up leaving the French capital this summer. As revealed by Jonathan Johnson of CBS Sports Golazo, the player confessed his desire to remain with PSG during the recent UNFP awards ceremony and that stance might not have changed irrespective of his refusal to exercise that one-year extension clause.

The former Monaco ace envisions a Parc des Princes exit but that is in 2024 and not necessarily now. Additionally, Real Madrid has always been his preferred destination but after spending big on Jude Bellingham this summer, the Spanish giants might not be able to sanction another mega-money signing.

The departure of Karim Benzema means there is a need for a new talisman forward at Santiago Bernabeu. Whether that will be Mbappe and whether that will happen this summer, only time will tell.
