The 2022/23 Bundesliga title race wrapped up today, but sadly for Dortmund, the final day of the season ended in heartbreak for BVB.
Edin Terzić's side entered Saturday's game, a home clash with Mainz 05, boasting 70 points, two more than closest rivals Bayern Munich. This meant the hosts needed a win at the Signal Iduna Park or to match Bayern's result in order to be crowned the champions of Germany for the first time since 2012.
Unfortunately, Reus and Co. failed to do that, instead drawing 2-2 while their rivals triumphed 2-1 over Koln in their final fixture to pip Dortmund to the crown on goal difference, shattering the hearts of the BVB players and fans.
The hosts started off on the wrong foot. After only 15 minutes, they were 1-0 down thanks to Andreas Hanche-Olsen's opener. Three minutes later, Dortmund were awarded a penalty and the golden opportunity to equalize immediately thanks to an intervention from VAR but Sebastian Haller's effort was saved. Five minutes later, the German giants went 2-0 down.
Raphaël Guerreiro pulled one back for the home side in the 69th minute but only after they had missed several opportunities. Terzic's side went on to squander several other chances until getting the equalizer in the sixth minutes of stoppage time through Niklas Sule.
Unfortunately, this was not enough as Jamal Musiala scored the winning goal for Bayern Munich in the final minute of normal time in their trip to Koln. Tuchel's men were drawing 1-1 until the young German sensation produced a moment of magic to secure the Bavarians an 11th consecutive Bundesliga title.

While Musiala and Co. celebrated that win in emphatic style, the Dortmund players dropped to their knees in tears at the Signal Iduna Park as it dawned on them that they had thrown away the German title on goal difference on the final day of the season. Fortunately for the players, die Schwarzgelben fans were there to lift them up as the supports applauded and cheered them on after the full-time whistle. All they needed was a win. They missed a penalty, MULTIPLE clear chances, and fell one goal short.

In only the most familiar fashion, Dortmund squander yet another shot at the title, the closest they've come in nearly one full decade.
