The Red Devils desperately need a new midfielder this summer and have identified this Arsenal and Liverpool target as a priority.

Manchester United are on the brink of securing their return to the UEFA Champions League and are thus aiming to bolster their squad ahead of 2023/24. A point on Thursday at home to Chelsea would guarantee a top-four finish, but if the Red Devils are to go far in the Premier League and Europe next season, they will need reinforcements this summer.

A new midfielder is something Ten Hag is desperate for and according to the Daily Mail, the 20-time English champions have identified their target. That man is none other than Mason Mount, the Chelsea talent who appears destined to leave Stamford Bridge this summer due to his contractual situation.

The Englishman is entering the final year of his current deal with the Blues and is yet to accept Chelsea's terms. As a result, Boehly and Co., who need to sell in order to balance the books after their unrivaled expenditure this season, would be open to cashing in on the Three Lions ace at the right price.

The report claims that Manchester United are preparing to bid $68M for the Englishman but here is where the problems start. That figure is way below Chelsea's valuation, with the Blues wanting over $100M for the 24-year-old (£85M). The London giants are unlikely to get that amount while the Red Devils are open to increasing their offer, which is a positive.

However, that isn't the only roadblock. Mount might be out of favor with the Chelsea fans but he is in high demand in the market, with both Arsenal and Liverpool wanting the midfielder. Arteta reportedly wishes to add more creativity to his squad after missing out on the Premier League title while Klopp's side are in need of a midfield overhaul and could pursue Mason alongside Brighton star Alexis Mac Allister.

Additionally, while Mauricio Pochettino is yet to be announced as the new Stamford Bridge boss, the Argentine has all but accepted the position and is said to be a huge admirer of the aforementioned Three Lions ace. This means the incoming tactician could launch a last-ditch attempt to keep him in West London.

However, Chelsea have spent over $695M under Boehly and Co. and will need to recoup money through sales in order to avoid FFP troubles. As a result, Mount, who could leave for free in a year's time, is likelier to be sold, which is a huge boost for Man United, Arsenal, and Liverpool.
