Manchester United have been dealt a late injury scare ahead of their Premier League clash with Liverpool on Sunday.

Manchester United are facing a late injury scare ahead of their Premier League clash against Liverpool. The Red Devils are sweating over the fitness of defender Raphael Varane, who complained of leg pain on the eve of the match.

Varane has been a key player for United this season, helping to establish the club as a real force in the domestic league and Europe this season. The 29-year-old center-back has formed a formidable centre-back partnership with summer signing Lisandro Martinez, and the team will be hoping he is fit enough to play some part in the match.

According to the Daily Mail, Varane will undergo a late fitness test after breakfast on Sunday to determine if he is fit enough to play. If he is unable to play, Erik ten Hag will have to turn to Victor Lindelof and club captain Harry Maguire, who started together during United's 3-1 FA Cup fifth round win at home to West Ham on Wednesday. The Dutch manager also has another alternative in Luke Shaw who has so far excelled in the make-shift center-back role whenever he has been called up.

It is worth noting that Erik ten Hag's side has not conceded from open play when Varane, Martinez and Casemiro are all playing. Despite the potential absence of Varane, United will be hoping to secure a win against Liverpool and move 11 points clear of fifth-placed Newcastle. A win would also cut the gap on their neighbours Manchester City back to six points.
