Pep's future at Man City in doubt after EPL probe

Pep Guardiola's future at Man City in doubt following Premier League probe

February 6, 2023 By Oscar Rojas
The Spanish boss could be one of the first to leave the club if the investigation sheds light on any wrongdoings.

Earlier today, reports revealing the accusations against Manchester City shocked the world and the Premier League, and things could get even worse if articles about Pep Guardiola's future turn out to be true.

The probe conducted by the Premier League has revealed 100 alleged breaches of the competition's financial laws, which could carry different sanctions that could go from being fined, have points deducted, or even being kicked out of the tournament, which would see the team being relegated if these accusations turn out to be true. But the biggest punishment to this team's legacy could come from within the club, as Pep Guardiola could walk away without any hesitation as part of a vow he made back in May.

When Guardiola was asked about an alleged investigation by the Premier League, the manager from Santpedor stood by his employers and defended them from any wrongdoing, but he also admitted that any more accusations and eventual punishments would see him leaving the club with no questions asked.

"Even if people don't believe me, every single word in my press conferences is what I truly believe. I defend the club and our people because I work with them. When they are accused of something I ask them: 'Tell me about that.' They explain and I believe them. I said to them: 'If you lie to me, the day after, I am not here. I will be out and I will not be your friend any more," Guardiola said almost nine months back.

Now, the smart money and even betting experts have seen Guardiola's chances of leaving Manchester City increasing with each passing hour. The coach has also been used as a spokesman for his current employers, and if that continues to be the trend during his stay with the Cityzens, he might also choose to step down.

Guardiola was quite critical when it came to analyzing the financial dealings of teams such as Chelsea or Liverpool. Unfortunately for him, those words will be haunting him for as long as this investigation develops.

"When you put something here (a sponsor) it's overpaid, but in other (clubs) the money comes from the USA but the money is correct, even if it's higher. We have to deal with that, we have to fight with that. As always I am a big fan to support this organisation, no doubt," Guardiola added.

The 2021-22 Premier League champions are currently five points behind Arsenal in the title race, but everything could end up being good for nothing if a harsh sanction is given to the Sky Blues. Premier League teams have asked for a swift solution to this conflict, but it is yet to be seen if such a thorough investigation comes to an end before the conclusion of the 2022-23 campaign.
