English football resumes this midweek, with the Cityzens and the Reds locking horns in the standout fixture.

The FIFA World Cup might have just ended, but club football is already upon us! England is gearing up for a return to action, with the Carabao Cup ushering things back before the Premier League's resumption on Boxing Day.

Round of 16 in the League Cup will get underway on Tuesday but the eight games will take place between December 20 and Thursday, December 22, with one fixture taking center stage. That clash is none other than Manchester City vs. Liverpool.

A number of Premier League giants have already bowed out of the competition, namely Arsenal, Chelsea, and Tottenham, but Manchester United and Newcastle remain in the hunt for the Carabao Cup. Here's everything you need to know about the upcoming round.

Top games to watch in the Carabao Cup round of 16

Newcastle vs. Bournemouth

Eddie Howe, the highly-rated mastermind behind Newcastle's outstanding 2022/23 campaign, faces off against the club where his managerial career kicked off. The English heavyweights will welcome Bournemouth, Howe's former club, to St. James' Park, with a spot in the quarterfinals going to the victor.

The Magpies reached this round courtesy of a hard-fought battle with Crystal Palace, with Pope and Co. beating the Eagles on penalties. Meanwhile, the Cherries steamrolled past Everton in the previous round, beating Lampard's men 4-1 to set up this fixture. These two clubs are currently in the Premier League and have crossed paths already this season. However, that run-in ended in a 1-1 draw, meaning this tie could settle the score between Howe's men and the newly-promoted club.

Manchester United vs. Burnley

This is another interesting showdown as it pits the high-flying Red Devils against the Championship leaders. Ten Hag will look to maintain his side's form but will be without a number of key players due to their participation at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Manchester United reached this round by beating Aston Villa 4-2, with young winger Alejandro Garnacho stealing the show. The Argentine starlet would go on to score a dramatic last-minute winner in the Premier League vs. Fulham a while later and will be keen on another electrifying display in front of the Old Trafford crowd.

Burnley, meanwhile, have turned into one of the most attractive teams in the Championship under the tutelage of Manchester City icon Vincent Kompany. The Clarets currently top the table by three points, having lost only twice in 23 outings. In the Carabao Cup, Burnley had to get past Shrewsbury Town and Crawley Town. However, Manchester United will be the ultimate test for Kompany and Co.

Manchester City vs. Liverpool

All eyes will be on this fixture for two reasons. First of all, two of Europe's finest managers will go head to head once again, with Jurgen Klopp renewing his rivalry with Pep Guardiola, having overcome the Spaniard 1-0 in the Premier League earlier this season. Additionally, both teams will be without a key player or two due to the recent FIFA World Cup, which wrapped up over the weekend.

The Cityzens, who overcame Chelsea in the previous round, should have a fully fit and energized Erling Haaland-Kevin de Bruyne duo available. The Reds, on the other hand, are without Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota due to injuries but have Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, and Darwin Nunez – who crashed out of Qatar 2022 in the group stage with Uruguay – ready to go. Will Pep get revenge for the 1-0 defeat at Anfield back in October? Tune in to find out.
