Szczesny reveals hilarious bet he made with Messi

WATCH: Poland goalkeeper Szczesny reveals hilarious bet he made with Messi before saving Argentine's penalty

December 1, 2022 By Ali M.
The Juventus shot-stopper saved Leo's first-half penalty. However, when speaking after the game, Wojciech revealed that he actually lost a bet to La Pulga.

Poland might have lost 2-0 to Argentina in their final group-stage game but goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny came out of that match as a hero.

The Eagles made it to the round of 16 by the skin of their teeth, finishing level on points with third-placed Mexico but with a superior goal difference. Had the European nation conceded an additional goal or two, things could have been different, hence the praise for Szczesny.

The Juventus shot-stopper made a number of crucial saves, none more so than his first-half penalty heroic versus Lionel Messi. Argentina were awarded a controversial spot-kick via VAR after the Polish goalkeeper made contact with La Pulga's face when coming to claim a cross, albeit only slightly. However, the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner was unable to beat the former Arsenal man.

For the second time this tournament, Szczesny saved a penalty, guessing right for Messi's attempt and helping his nation avoid a huge defeat. While many fans were enraged by the decision to award the penalty, Wojciech was light-hearted after the game and even revealed a hilarious bet he made with the Copa America winner.

While the Serie A ace admitted to making contact with Leo's face, he did not believe a penalty would be awarded. In fact, when speaking to TV 2 Sport, the 32-year-old said that he was extremely confident that he even made a 100 Euros bet with Messi that the referee would not point to the spot.

"No, I didn't [think the penalty would be given]," Szczesny told the Norwegian channel

"We spoke before the penalty and I told him I can bet him €100 that he wasn't going to give it.

"So I've lost a bet against Messi. I don't know if that's allowed at the World Cup. I'm probably going to be banned for it. I don't care right now and I'm not going to pay him either!"

"Nah, he doesn't care about €100, come on," Wojciech replied when the reporter asked him if he really wasn't going to pay the Argentine, joking that Leo probably has enough money in his bank. Catch this hilarious post-match interview in the video below.

It's fair to say the Polish goalkeeper won't get banned over this brilliant banter. As a result, expect to see him in between the sticks for his nation in the round of 16.

The Eagles missed out on the top spot to La Albiceleste, meaning they will have to face France in the knockout stage. Meanwhile, Messi and Co. got a favorable fixture: a showdown with Group D runners-up Australia.
