Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates will aim to make it out of one of the most difficult groups at this year's World Cup in Qatar.

European heavyweights Portugal have been drawn into Group H of the 2022 World Cup along with South Korea, Ghana and Uruguay. The group is arguably the toughest in this year's World Cup considering the pedigree of the teams involved. However, all the teams involved will be eager to progress to the next round although there is no doubt that Portugal and Uruguay will be tipped as favourites to make it to the knockout phase. Needless to say, expect to be intrigued with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Heung-min Son, Thomas Partey, Darwin Nunez, all set to carry the flags of their respective countries.

Team descriptions: Who's in Group H?

Portugal: Portugal will be featuring in their eighth World Cup at Qatar 2022 and their sixth in succession in the competition's history. The European heavyweights have had the likes of Eusebio, Luís Figo, Rui Costa, Ricardo Carvalho, and Cristiano Ronaldo, in their ranks for previous editions but have not particularly been lucky in their bid for success on the global stage.

The Selecao's best-ever-finish at the mundial occurred in 1966 where they had to settle for a third-place finish after losing 2–1 to the hosts and eventual winners England in the semi-final. In 2006 they came close to another final appearance but were denied by France's 1-0 win. They ended up finishing fourth instead after losing 3-1 to Germany in the third-place playoff.

Uruguay: It has been over 72 years since Uruguay last won the World Cup and at Qatar, that desire will be rekindled once more. La Celeste will be making their 14 appearance at the mundial and ranks among the teams with the most participation at the tournament.

As the host of the first-ever World Cup organised, they snatched the first title in 1930 before securing their second in Brazil in 1950. The two feats have since not been matched despite the personnel that have been available to the side in over a decade now.

Ghana: Ghana will be making their fourth World Cup appearance in Qatar come November. The West African country has been a regular customer in all but one of the last five World Cups, having missed the trip to Russia some four years ago. The first appearance for the Black Stars at the intercontinental tournament happened in Germany, where they managed a Round-of-16 appearance before being kicked out by Brazil.

Ghana's best performance yet at the World Cup came in 2010 when South Africa hosted the tournament. With the whole of Africa behind the team, they ended up being eliminated in the quarter-finals in a penalty shoot-out after a 1–1 draw in which they missed a penalty after Luis Suárez's infamous handball incident. Four years later, a poor campaign in Brazil led to the Black Stars to a group stage elimination before failing to qualify for Russia 2018.

South Korea: The World Cup in Qatar will be South Korea's 10th consecutive appearance at the tournament and 11th in total. In hindsight, no team from Asia has played in as many world cups as the Taeguk Warriors. They first debuted in 1954 and have continued to do so continuously through 1986.

The 2002 tournament, which South Korea co-hosted with Japan, yielded their best-ever finish of fourth place, making them the first team from outside of Europe and the Americas to go to the semifinals.

Must-watch games in Group H

The meeting between Portugal and Uruguay will be one to keep an eye on considering the calibre of players on the roster of both sides. Also, the clash between Uruguay and Ghana will draw a lot of interest, with the latter having a score to settle with the South Americans from agonisingly dumping them out of the World Cup in South Africa.

Group H players to keep an eye on

Cristiano Ronaldo: In what will be the last-ever World Cup of his career, Cristiano Ronaldo will be eager to bow out on a high and potentially lead his country to success. The 37-year-old forward has not had the best of times on the club level but will eye a redemption to get things back on track.

Heung-min Son: The Tottenham Hotspur attacker is the poster boy for the South Korean side. Last season, the 29-year-old winger was named the Premier League Golden Boot winner and was also the highest scorer for his side in the World Cup qualifiers with seven goals.

Darwin Nunez: The most-expensive Liverpool signing will aim to form an attacking partnership with Edinson Cavani or Luis Suarez when Uruguay make their 14th appearance at the World Cup. The striker is yet to hit a purple patch in the Premier League but could inspire his side to success with his goals.

Thomas Partey: Ghana will be counting on Thomas Parety to replicate the form that has seen Arsenal enjoy an incredible run in the Premier League this season when they arrive in Qatar. The midfielder has often struggled on the international front but could well be the key piece in the puzzle for Ghana as they eye another memorable campaign.

World Cup Group H prediction

Portugal are the undisputed favorites to top the group and could be joined by either Uruguay or South Korea for the next round. The clash between this duo may well reveal who will qualify alongside the Selecao. All things being equal, Ghana can be the dark horses if all the elements align in their favor.

  • Portugal - Through to the next round.

  • Uruguay - Through to the next round.

  • South Korea - Eliminated.

  • Ghana - Eliminated.
