The 2022 MLS Cup comes to its conclusion as Los Angeles FC and Philadelphia Union prepare to lock horns on Saturday, November 5th.

On Saturday, the 2022 MLS season will come to its conclusion as Los Angeles and Philadelphia Union are set to take part in the MLS Cup final. Los Angeles, who will be serving at hosts, come into this contest as the Supporters' Shield winners, the prize given to the team who not only finished top of their conference but also on top of all teams taking part in the regular season. Steve Cherundolo's side come into this match having eased to a 3-0 win over Austin in the Western Conference finals, but prior to that, had to really work hard to secure a hard-fought 3-2 result against city rivals LA Galaxy in the semi's.

Meanwhile, Philadelphia Union, who are currently led by Jim Curtin, finished top of the Eastern Conference with 67 points. Interestingly, they were also tied on points with Los Angeles, but were pipped to the Supporters' Shield as their upcoming opponents had more season wins (21 vs. 19). Their path to this juncture has been somewhat similar to Los Angeles, with a gritty 1-0 win over Cincinnati in the semi-finals setting them up nicely for the Eastern Conference finals, where they got revenge on New York City FC and defeated them 3-1 to deny them a chance to defend their title in this competition.

Amazingly, both Los Angeles and Philadelphia Union are making their first appearance in a MLS Cup final, meaning that whoever wins it on Saturday will be making history. Having lost in 2019 3-1 to eventual cup winners Seattle Sounders during the Western Conference Finals, Los Angeles will be hoping to make amends, especially as they will be playing at home, where, for the past few seasons, the home pitch advantage has really helped play its part.

Indeed, the last time the visiting side won in regulation time was back in 2015; since then, the most recent visitors to win (via penalties) have been Seattle Sounders and New York City, who clinched the trophy in 2016 and 2021. However, as fans know, stats do not tell the true story of a match, and really, anything could happen on Saturday as both teams battle to make history and win their first MLS Cup finals.
