About Belgium in the World Cup history

Belgium will be making their fourteenth appearance on the world stage when they take to the field at Qatar in November 2022. Having established themselves as a powerhouse in European football, the Red Devils will be aiming for a better finish than they have ever managed in the history of the World Cup.

Four years ago in Russia, they bettered their fourth place finish in 1986 - their best-ever in history - and managed to secure a bronze medal after defeating England in the third-place playoff. In this year's edition, Belgium will hope to make it four successive appearances in the knockout stage having featured in at least the Round of 16 in the last three appearances at the competition.

Who is Belgium's head coach for the 2022 FIFA World Cup?

Roberto Martinez is the current head coach of the Belgian national team. After spells in club management for Swansea, Wigan Athletic and Everton, the Spanish coach was assumed the seat in the dugout for the Red Devils in May 2016. In May 2016, he was sacked as their manager, and became Belgium's head coach on 3 August 2016.

Following the appointment, Martinez guided them to third place in 2018 FIFA World Cup, their best-ever position in the competition, as well as holding first place for Belgium in the FIFA World Rankings from 2018 to 2022.

Belgium's expectations ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup

The 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar will be the last for Belgium's 'golden generation'. The likes of Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne, Thibaut Courtois, Romelu Lukaku, Yannick Carassco, among others are all at the peak of their career and will be poised to etch their names in the history books of the mundial.

Four years ago, the group came close to managing their country's first-ever final appearance at the competition but were stopped in their tracks by eventual winners France in the semi-final. In the upcoming edition, they will attempt to win the title despite the magnitude of the task ahead.

Belgium's key players ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup

Kevin De Bruyne: At the moment, no outfield player in the Belgian side can rival the pedigree of Kevin De Bruyne. The Manchester City star has established himself as arguably the best midfielder in European football, consistently wowing fans with consistent brilliance year after year. De Bruyne's importance to the Belgian national team cannot be overstated and in Qatar, he will once again show the masses what he is capable of.

Thibaut Courtois: Just like fine wine, Thibaut Courtois is having his best career yet as he ages. The 30-year-old Real Madrid goalkeeper has been colossal on both domestic and international levels and will definitely be relied on if Belgium is to go farther in the competition.

Romelu Lukaku: The fact that the whole technical team of the Belgium national team is sweating over the fit of Romelu Lukaku gives a clear indication of how influential he is to the side. Aside from his knack for goalscoring, the Inter Milan striker leadership traits are a crucial element for the dressing room of the Red Devils. Having suffered a thigh injury while on recent duty for his club side, Roberto Martinez and his technical team will be hoping for a positive outcome soon.

Eden Hazard: At the moment, his form is nowhere near what many know him for but Eden Hazard remains an integral character for Belgium as far their plans are concerned. As captain of the side, the Real Madrid winger epitomises the talent that remains in abundance for his side. With his playing chances with Los Blancos limited, he will eye a rejuvenation at Qatar in order to get things rolling when the season resumes.
