2022 FIFA World Cup TV & Online Broadcast Guide for Portugal

The Seleção have not had the best luck at World Cups in recent times, but will be hoping to change that this year in Qatar.

Watching and streaming the 2022 World Cup in Portugal

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar 2022 will be streamed across familiar Portuguese broadcasters. RTP, SIC, TVI and SPORT TV will combine to offer viewers in Portugal all 64 World Cup matches across multi-platform broadcasts on TV (terrestrial and commercial), OTT, radio, web, mobile and app streaming as well as on-demand (OTT, web and apps).

World Cup on RTP

Public service broadcaster RTP holds free-to-air Portuguese rights to the 2022 World Cup. It has agreed to share the coverage with private terrestrial networks SIC and TVI following a sublicense deal. RTP still retains the rights to 22 World Cup matches including the Final and is expected to provide comprehensive coverage of the tournament besides live matches, including match highlights, pre- and post-match shows. The 2022 World Cup on RTP may be streamed live on VOD service RTP Play.

World Cup on SIC

Impresa Group-owned TV network SIC has selected four group stage matches from the 2022 World Cup involving France, Spain, Argentina, and Portugal, in addition to two Round of 16 matches. It has additionally announced the broadcast of the quarterfinals if Portugal features at that stage.

World Cup on TVI

Private free-to-air network TVI has obtained Portuguese rights to the 2022 World Cup subsequent to a sublicense deal with national broadcaster RTP. TVI has agreed to show three group stage matches, in addition to two Round of 16 matches, one quarterfinal and one semifinal. TVI's 2022 World Cup matches may be streamed live on OTT service TVI Player.

World Cup on SPORT TV

Sport TV has secured pay-TV Portuguese rights to the 2022 World Cup. The cable network has all 64 matches and has announced a new fully-dedicated FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 channel for exclusive content. Subscribers may also stream the games on Sport TV's mobile apps.

About Portugal in FIFA World Cup history

Portugal will be making their eighth appearance at a FIFA World Cup. The Seleção had their best run in 1966, when they finished in third place, and in more modern times, their best finish was fourth in 2006. Four years ago, their journey ended early in the round of 16, and certainly, the team will be hoping to try to improve on that when the latest installment of the world's most prestigious football competition kicks off in Qatar.

Who is Portugal's coach for the 2022 FIFA World Cup?

Appointed in 2014, the now 68-year-old Fernando Santos will be hoping to add a World Cup title to his trophy cabinet this year in Qatar. Santos successfully helped the Seleção win their first ever title back in 2016, when Portugal successfully beat hosts France in the final, and three years later, oversaw the team as they won the 2019 UEFA Nations League. To date, those are the two major titles Portugal have won in their history, and certainly will hope to have a good run at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Under Fernando Santos, Portugal won both EURO 2016 and the 2019 UEFA Nations League, which are the first two major titles for the country

Santos has been in charge of the Portuguese team since September 23, 2014, and is arguably the country's most successful coach. During EURO 2016, Portugal remained the only unbeaten team throughout, from the group stages all the way to to the final, and despite a disappointing finish at EURO 2020, where they were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Belgium, there are high hopes that he may be able to ensure that Portugal have a good showing this year in Qatar.

Portugal's expectations ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup

Portugal had to book their spot at the 2022 FIFA World Cup the hard way after a shock 2-1 home loss to Serbia, which meant that the Serbs qualified as automatic group winners. However, the Seleção successfully navigated their way through two play-off ties: first against Turkey in the semi's, beating them 3-1 before dispatching Eastern European minnows North Macedonia, who had pulled off a huge upset by beating Italy, 2-0 in the final to secure their spot in Qatar.

Although the team do have superstar Cristiano Ronaldo in their ranks, along with Manchester City duo Bernardo Silva and João Cancelo, they are not viewed as heavy favorites to win the title. That being said, not many rated Portugal during EURO 2016 and they did ultimately win it, so anything is possible in Qatar should all their key players kick into the right gear at the right time.

Portugal: Key players for the 2022 FIFA World Cup

Obviously, no one can talk about Portugal without mentioning Cristiano Ronaldo, who not surprisingly is not only Portugal's most capped player but also the nation's all-time top goal-scorer. Despite being 37, the Portuguese superstar is still expected to be a protagonist for his side as he hopes to win the one title that has eluded him during his highly successful career. Having missed out on the Ballon d'Or for the last few editions, should Ronaldo be able to lead his side to glory - similar to what he did at EURO 2016 - he certainly could put himself in good contention to win what would be his sixth prize.

Manchester City duo João Cancelo and Bernando Silva are also key players for the Seleção and both will be expected to bring their respective A-games if Portugal want to progress in Qatar. In addition, Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes will want to prove some of his doubters wrong after some criticism from some quarters, while Atletico Madrid youngster João Félix will want to prove himself in his first ever appearance at a World Cup.

Portugal's roster for the 2022 FIFA World Cup

Here is Portugal's 26-man squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup:

Goalkeepers: Diogo Costa (Porto), Rui Patrício (Roma), Jose Sa (Wolves)

Defenders: Pepe (Porto), Joao Cancelo (Manchester City), Ruben Dias (Manchester City), Diogo Dalot (Manchester United),  Nuno Mendes (PSG), Antonio Silva (Benfica), Raphael Guerreiro (Borussia Dortmund), Danilo Pereira (PSG)

Midfielders: Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United), Bernardo Silva (Manchester City), Joao Palhinha (Fulham), Matheus Nunes (Wolves), William Carvalho (Real Betis), Ruben Neves (Wolves), Joao Mario (Benfica), Vitinha (PSG), Otavio (Porto)

Forwards: Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United), Joao Felix (Atlético Madrid), Goncalo Ramos (Benfica), Andre Silva (RB Leipzig), Ricardo Horta (Braga), Rafael Leao (AC Milan)

Portugal's 2022 FIFA World Cup schedule

Portugal will be featuring in Group H, alongside Uruguay, Ghana, and South Korea. Cristiano Ronaldo and his colleagues begin their group stage campaign against Ghana in a rematch of the 2014 World Cup on November 24th, followed by a clash against Uruguay on November 28th, before taking on Tottenham star Son-Heung Min and South Korea on December 2nd.
