The Manchester City star has been heavily linked with a move back to Spain, where he'd link up with his close friend and international teammate at a La Liga giant.

With his contract at Manchester City set to expire at the end of this season, Sergio Aguero's next destination has been one of the most widely discussed stories so far this year.

The Argentinian superstar, who's currently Manchester City's all-time top goal-scorer, naturally has plenty of teams all over the world lining up to sign him, and as he's available on a free transfer, many big clubs certainly will want to have a proven talent like him on their roster. He's been linked with possibly staying in the Premier League, where he'd have a chance to break Alan Shearer's record; Shearer has 260 goals, whereas Aguero has 182, which puts him at fourth.

At the same time, Ligue 1 powerhouse PSG have also reportedly been keen on bringing him to Paris as they look to beef up an already star-studded attack.

And now, new reports have him moving closer to inking a two-year deal with none other than Barcelona. Aguero is no stranger to La Liga, having spent five seasons with Atletico Madrid. According to Eurosport, what's really driving this Aguero to Camp Nou story is first, Aguero's well-known strong bond with fellow Argentine Lionel Messi, and apparently, Barcelona and his agent have had positive and productive talks that are now nearing an advanced stage.

The same report also claims that securing Aguero would have a positive domino effect, as his friendship with Messi would ensure that Barca's skipper would stay put at Camp Nou. Last year saw the multi Ballon d'Or winner engage in a public and embarrassing spat with his club that was ultimately resolved, but there were rumors that were flying about that Messi could've left for England to, interestingly, enough, head off to Manchester City to join Aguero and Pep Guardiola.

Whether there was any actual truth to that, we'll never know, but it will be very interesting to see what comes of these new Aguero to Barcelona rumors. One thing's for certain, though: Blaugrana fans certainly would enjoy to see the two friends linking up next season as Barcelona look to try to challenge for multiple honors in Spain and Europe in the 2021/2022 term.
