The final moments of the 2011 summer transfer window produced a handful of interesting news. Arsene Wenger’s late shopping robbed the headlines.
Arsenal’s club, fans and coach are hoping to put their agonizing days behind them. Last Sunday’s horrific 8-2 defeat to Manchester United was the final loud call for Wenger to spend money on the transfer market. Andre Santos, Yossi Benayoun and Mertesacker have therefore become Arsenal’s latest captures.

“Santos is a quality player, with the ability to both defend well and get forward and help with attacks,” Wenger declared according to Arsenal’s official website as he talked about Andre Santos’ switch from Fenerbahçe.

“He has experience in the Champions League and for Brazil. He has proven he can deliver at the highest level.”

Former Liverpool and Chelsea player Yossi Benayoun, meanwhile, confirmed his switch by stating a few minutes before the end of the transfer window:

“I sign with Arsenal, very happy and excited about it.”

Earlier in the day, Per Mertesacker’s transfer from Werder Bremen to Arsenal was confirmed. The German defender, whose task will be to solve the Gunners’ defending problems, was quoted as saying by reporters:

“I had a great time at Werder and I owe a lot to the club. The move to London is a wish come true to take another step in my career.

“The English Premier League has for me always represented an interesting challenge.”

How well will Yossi Benayoun, Per Mertesacker and Andre Santos fit in Arsene Wenger’s squad. How influential will they be for Arsenal? Life after Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri goes on for the Gunners and their fans…
