EPL round-up: Chelsea, Tottenham suffer huge blow in top-four race as Man City continue title march

April 6, 2021 By Ali M.
Chelsea, Tottenham, and Arsenal all suffered disappointing results over the weekend while Man City brushed Leicester aside to maintain their impressive form.

The Premier League resumed action on Saturday after going on a two-week break due to the international break, and what a return it was! Chelsea kicked things off with their home clash with West Brom and suffered the most shocking result of the weekend, losing 5-2 to the relegation-battling side. Arsenal took to the field later that same day and suffered a similar embarrassment, losing 3-0 at home to Liverpool courtesy of a Diogo Jota brace. Both Man City and Man Utd enjoyed victories, beating Leicester and Brighton respectively, while Tottenham endured another slip-up from a winning position, throwing away a 2-1 lead to draw 2-2 at Newcastle. Here's everything you need to know about the recent round of fixtures.

Top five teams in the EPL until April 10, 2021

The upcoming Matchday kicks off on Friday, April 9, but the top teams do not take to the field until the following day. Man City face Leeds in Saturday's early kick off and could add to their lead over Man United, who take on Tottenham later that same day.

Despite the poor result, Harry Kane enjoyed a lovely weekend, scoring a brace in the 2-2 draw with Newcastle to remain top of the Golden Boot race. Mohamed Salah also got on the scoresheet in the 3-0 victory over Arsenal and is just one behind the Englishman while Bruno Fernandes remains in third.

  • Mohamed Salah scored a lovely goal in the 3-0 win over Arsenal. That was his 50th away goal for the Reds in only 93 appearances, with only Ian Rush (92 apps) managing to reach the half-a-century mark quicker than the Egyptian.

  • Chelsea lost 5-2 at home to West Brom, a result that will go down in history. The Blues threw away a one-nil lead en route to their thrashing, a capitulation sparked by Thiago Silva's sending off. Not only did Tuchel lose his unbeaten run, it was also the first time the London giants conceded at the Bridge since appointing the German boss.

  • Jamie Vardy reached an excellent milestone in the clash with Man City, with the Leicester legend making his 300th appearance for the Foxes. Unfortunately, the game did not end well as the home side were on the receiving end of a 2-0 loss.

  • Tottenham drew 2-2 on Sunday in a disappointing slip-up for Spurs in the heated top-four race. This was the sixth time Mourinho's men threw away a half-time lead, the most by any Premier League side this season.

Top matches to watch in the EPL: Apr. 9-12, 2021

Manchester City vs Leeds United: After playing out a 1-1 draw in their first encounter, Guardiola and Bielsa will get their rematch this weekend. Last time out, Man City were in a bad position and were struggling in the absence of both Aguero and Jesus. Fast forward to today and the Citizens are soaring towards the title. Can Bamford and Co. hand them an upset at the Etihad?

Liverpool vs Aston Villa: The last time the Reds faced Grealish and Co, they were slapped 7-2 in a historic defeat for the Reds. A lot has changed since then, with Klopp losing the likes of Van Dijk, Gomes, and Matip in defense. The Merseyside giants look to finish in the top four but will be in for a tough time this weekend.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United: This is undoubtedly the game of the week as Spurs host Man Utd with the aim of bouncing back from their 2-2 draw with Newcastle. The Red Devils are England's second-best team and will thus be no easy feat. However, Mourinho cannot afford to drop points in this must-win fixture.
