Reigning World Cup champions France will face Eastern European minnows Ukraine for a World Cup qualifier on Wednesday, March 24th.

Preview: France vs Ukraine

After winning their first World Cup since 1998 last summer France will be looking to take their first steps towards successfully defending their title as they welcome Eastern European minnows Ukraine on Wednesday.

France will be hoping to become the first side since Brazil did so in 1958 and 1962 to win back to back titles. But first, they'll need to secure their spot, as expected, at the upcoming tournament at Qatar. If France can do this, Les Bleus will become only the third team in World Cup history to do this after Italy (in 1934 and 1938) and Brazil (in 1958 and 1962).

This summer will see Didier Deschamps's men feature at EURO 2020, a tournament that was supposed to take part last summer but was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. France, who failed to win the last iteration of the quadrennial competition in 2016 on home soil, will be eager to get revenge on Portugal, who lifted the trophy at their expense in the final, and who they'll be facing on matchday three in the group stages. Another tricky opponent in their quartet will be Germany, who they will face in their opening group stage tie.

The hosts have enjoyed a long track record of success against their upcoming visitors, with wins in six of their last ten meetings with Ukraine. In addition, Deschamps's side humiliated Ukraine 7-1 in a friendly meeting last October so should be in good stead in this upcoming game. Moreover, Ukraine haven't appeared at any World Cup as an independent nation 2006, when they were dumped out by eventual winners Italy, and while they do have fellow minnows like Bosnia and Finland in their group, they really will be at a huge disadvantage when taking on the reigning World Cup winners here.
