Chelsea: Tuchel makes EPL history with Everton win

Chelsea: Thomas Tuchel makes Premier League history with Everton win

March 8, 2021 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The German manager reached an all-new milestone in the Premier League as his side extended their unbeaten run.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has set a new Premier League record after overseeing his side's victory over Everton at Stamford Bridge. The German coach guided the Blues to a 2-0 win over the top-four chasing side to land an all-new milestone as the first manager in the Premier League to have his team keep cleansheets in his first five home outings.

Ben Godfrey's own-goal in the 31st-minute broke the deadlock when Kai Havertz's shot deflected off him past Everton shot-stopper Jordan Pickford. Chelsea then upped the ante in the second half, earning a spot-kick after the England No.1 denied Havertz a goalscoring opportunity by bringing him down in his penalty area. Jorginho subsequently stepped up to hand the host a two-goal advantage.

While Chelsea could have scored more had it not been for Pickford denying Werner, Alonso and Mount, they were equally resolute at the back. Goalkeeper Eduoard Mendy had to face just one shot on target throughout Monday night's proceeding. So far, the Senegalese shot-stopper has only conceded just two goals in 11 appearances since Thomas Tuchel took over as his side's manager.

For the former Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund headcoach, the night's win meant that he has now gone 11 games unbeaten since taking over the reins of the club after Frank Lampard's sack. So far, only Maurizio Sarri and Frank Clark have had a better start than the German coach in the club's history.

On the contrary, Everton landed an unwanted milestone of their own with Ben Godfrey's own-goal being the club's 52nd in the Premier League's history. Their own-goal tally is five more than what any club has ever managed in the competition's record books.
