FA WSL Roundup – Man. City conquers the Manchester Derby and edge closer to leaders Chelsea

February 15, 2021 By Juan Aguerrevere
FA Women’s Super League leaders Chelsea has a new and larger problem in hand with Manchester City building up momentum for a possible league-deciding clash between the two on April 2021. But for now, let us go over everything that went down from last week.

Last week’s FA WSL games consisted of a mixture of Matchday 15 and postponed fixtures.

Chelsea asserted its dominance over struggling London rivals Arsenal, winning 3-0 at Kingsmeadow on Wednesday to kick off last week’s action. Simultaneously, Brighton & Hove Albion secured its second league victory in a row defeating West Ham United at home 1-0 at home. The other two games on Wednesday – Birmingham City vs. Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur – were postponed due to frozen pitches. Like Chelsea earlier in the week, Manchester City stomped on its rivals Manchester United 3-0 at home on Friday afternoon to overtake them in the league table. And on Sunday, Reading and Everton drew to keep both sides at 19 points so far in the season.

Two postponed matches were scheduled to be played on Sunday, but only one of the two took place. Bristol City fell to Chelsea at home 5-0 and Aston Villa’s game against Arsenal was also postponed due to harsh weather conditions.

FA WSL top 3 scorers

Arsenal’s Vivianne Miedema remains at the top of the FA WSL goalscoring charts with 12 goals despise scoring her last goal on Jan. 17. The two-game goal drought in addition to a slew of postponed matches has gotten in the way of the Dutch striker’s goalscoring spree.

Chelsea forwards Samantha Kerr and Fran Kirby have closed in on Miedema’s 12 goals with 11 goals each. Kirby bagged in a goal against Arsenal on Wednesday and added two more to her account against Bristol City on Sunday. Kerr’s 12th also came in on Sunday against the Robins.

Top FA WSL to watch, Feb. 28

The WSL will take a break until Sunday, Feb. 28, when two postponed games from matchdays 10 and 13 are scheduled to take place.

Birmingham City vs. Manchester City – Sunday, Feb. 28, at 9 a.m. ET

Manchester City will have a couple of weeks to prepare for an important away game at Birmingham. A win would see the Sky Blues just two points behind Chelsea. On the other hand, Birmingham City is safe at the moment with, 11 points and five away from relegation with four games in hand.

Tottenham Hotspur vs. Everton – Sunday, Feb. 28, at 9 a.m. ET

Tottenham head coach Rehanne Skinner will see their game against Everton as a challenge to turn the tables around after consecutive defeats to Chelsea and Aston Villa. The Spurs are sitting in eighth place with 12 points and three games at hand. Willi Kirk’s Everton is looking for its first win since Jan. 17. Since that 4-0 win over Bristol City, Everton has fallen to Manchester United and drawn Birmingham City and Reading.
