The Bavarians have snapped up the young French defender from rivals RB Leipzig.

Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich have completed the signing of Dayot Upamecano from rivals RB Leipzig. The Bavarians announced on Sunday that they have secured the service of the 22-year-old French center-back on a five-year deal ahead of this summer's transfer window.

The reigning European and Club World Cup champions reportedly paid the full release clause of Upamecano which amounts to €42.5 million ($52m/£37m). The defender, who was on the radar of a host of top European clubs including Real Madrid, Juventus, Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea, is expected to finish the season at Leipzig before he moves to Munich this summer.

A statement released by the club reads as follows: "Dayot Upamecano (22, RB Leipzig) will move to FC Bayern München from 1 July 2021. The defender and the German record champions have agreed the terms of a five-year deal until 30 June 2026."

Last season, Upamecano was particularly instrumental in RB Leipzig reaching the semi-final of the UEFA Champions League and has added to his meteoric rise with a series of top performances in the ongoing campaign. Since making his debut in 2017, the Frenchman has so far made 139 appearances across all competitions for RB Leipzig. In September 2020, the young defender made his debut for the French national team by starting in a UEFA Nations League group-stage match against Sweden.
