Ligue 1 roundup: Top stats and headlines from February 6-7, 2021 weekend action

February 8, 2021 By Ali M.
PSG enjoyed a lovely Le Classique victory over Marseille, thus keeping up pace with Lille and Lyon in the heated three-way title race.

The weekend games in Ligue 1 saw Lille, Lyon, and PSG take to the field. France's top three teams all enjoyed victories, with Les Dogues beating Nantes 2-0, Les Gones overcoming Strasbourg 3-0, and Les Parisiens brushing aside a Marseille side in turmoil via a 2-0 score line. As a result, no change occurred in the title race, with Neymar and Co. remaining in third. Sixth-placed Lens hosted fifth-placed Rennes but missed out on an opportunity to leapfrog the visitors in the race to qualify for Europe, drawing 0-0, while Monaco beat Nîmes 4-3 to remain within touching distance of a Champions League spot. Here's everything you need to know about the weekend Ligue1 action.

Ligue 1 – top headlines

  • Payet was sent off in Sunday's Le Classique defeat. The Frenchman was shown a straight red card, his third since the start of the 2019/20 campaign. No player has been given his marching orders more often in that timeframe.

  • According to Canal+, Mbappe, who broke the deadlock in the 2-0 win over Marseille with a speedy counter-attack, hit a top speed of 36km/h before netting. No wonder he is known as one of the fastest players alive!

  • Monaco recorded their seventh consecutive win in 2021, becoming the third club in Ligue 1 history to begin the calendar year with as many consecutive victories.

  • Montpellier captain Vitorino Hilton made his 500th Ligue 1 appearance over the weekend, becoming the league's first foreign player to reach this tally. Furthermore, he is the oldest player to reach this landmark (43 years and 147 days).

Top matches to watch in Ligue 1: Feb. 13-14, 2021

  • PSG vs Nice: Adrian Ursea's side have not been enjoying the best of seasons but Nice are never a team worth underestimating. PSG cannot make this mistake, given that they recently lost to relegation-battling Lorient, as Pochettino's men aim to reclaim the top spot.

  • Lyon vs Montpellier: The last time these two sides met, Les Gones lost 2-1, with star playmaker Aouar being sent off amid rumors of a move to Arsenal. The Frenchman ended up staying and Lyon now find themselves in a heated three-way title race. They must beat La Paillade, given that PSG are only a point behind.

  • Lille vs Brest: The Ligue 1 leaders will host the mid-table side in what should be a straight-forward fixture. Of the three games, this taking place on Sunday as opposed to Saturday, meaning Christophe Galtier's men could head into this tie with the golden opportunity of increasing their lead at the top should any of their two closest rivals slip up.
