The Citizens could put the final nail in the coffin of Liverpool's title defense but must overcome their horrible record at Anfield. Here's our preview of Sunday's clash.

Preview – Liverpool vs Man City

Liverpool and Man City, the last two teams to win the Premier League and the two favorites to lift this season's prize, will lock horns at Anfield on Sunday in a do-or-die clash for the Reds' title defense. Klopp will host Guardiola's side in Merseyside at 11:30 a.m. ET live on NBC Sports, Telemundo, and SiriusXM FC.

This game is crucial for both sides as it could see the Citizens all but end Liverpool's title race, or it could see Salah and Co. make a statement and return to the fold. Thanks to their horrible form as of late, the Reds have dropped to fourth and now trail Pep's table-toppers by seven points. This comes as no surprise – with only two wins in their last eight league fixtures, the only way was down for the hosts.

Injuries have rocked their backline, with Joel Matip becoming the third senior center-back to be ruled out for the remainder of the season. However, their struggles in front of goal has been worrying, with Liverpool failing to score in their last three home league fixtures, losing two of those three ties as a result.

City, on the other hand, have been in ascendance. The Manchester giants have won their last nine EPL matches in a row and are unbeaten in their last 13 outings. They head into this clash on the back of a 2-0 triumph, a game which saw them register their sixth clean sheet in a row.

Victory at Anfield would see the Citizens move 10 points clear of their bitter rivals, a gap which could then be increased to 13 points should Sterling and Co. win their game in hand. Furthermore, given Man Utd's recent 3-3 draw with Everton, the league leaders could move five points clear of the second-placed Red Devils.

However, winning at Liverpool's infamous stadium has been a wall they've failed to scale for several years. The Reds have lost their last two league ties at Anfield, going 1-0 down against Burnley and Brighton. Despite this, expect Klopp's men to turn things up when Man City enter the arena.

Team news

Liverpool: While Joel Matip joined Van Dijk and Joe Gomez on the long-term injury list, Fabinho and Sadio Mane have returned, which is a huge boost. Alisson is also expected to return while Ozan Kabak will be hoping to make his Liverpool debut.

Man City: Pep will have to do without the services of De Bruyne and Aguero. Kyle Walker sat out the recent win over Burnley but is expected to return for a juicy showdown against Mane. Gabriel Jesus will continue leading to line and will look to score in his third successive match.

Key stats

  • Liverpool haven't lost at home to Man City since March 2003.

  • In fact, the Citizens have won only once in their last 29 trips to Anfield.

  • The Reds could lose three consecutive home matches for the first time since September 1963.

  • Victory would see Guardiola's side equal the record for most consecutive wins by an English top-flight club (14).
