Third-division side Alcoyano will host Real Madrid at Estadio El Collao in what will be one of the biggest games in their history on Wednesday. The Valencia-based club has exceeded expectations so far, beating Laredo and Huesca in their running to the last 32 stage. Although the upcoming clash with La Liga's defending champions presents a different test, they will be poised to upset the odds once again considering how well they have played in recent weeks.
Alcoyano go into the encounter off the back of a seven game unbeaten run, winning five games and drawing the remaining two. They boast a really good defensive record over the period as well, conceding just three goals in the games played. In the previous win over Huesca in the cup competition, Alcoyano managed just 26 percent of the possession count but made use of swift counter attacking moves to secure a 2-1 off the back of a solid defense. A similar game plan might come in handy against Real Madrid although the Spanish capital club have more quality within their ranks to punish the Segunda Division B side.
Zinedine Zidane's side are already nursing the wound incurred from the 2-1 defeat suffered against Athletic Club in the semi-finals of the Supercopa de Espana and will be disinterested in dropping out of another top level competition in a matter of days. Prior to the defeat against the Basque club, Los Blancos were on a nine-game unbeaten run across all competitions.
Not much has gone in their favor in the last four outings anyway, with La Liga's defending champions picking up just one win. Needless to say, the odds are still in favor of the Merengues to get the better of Alcoyano. A win should put the club within four games of potentially clinching their first Copa Del Rey title in six years.
Alcoyano will not have Manuel Raillo and Ruben Garces available as they are both injured. There is however a boost in the side with Jona returning to the fold after being deemed ineligible to face Hercules.
For Real Madrid, a host of players are set to be rested. Both Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane are expected to be unavailable for the game after picking up knocks in the defeat to Athletic Club.
