Man City defeat Man Utd in league cup semis

Manchester City defeat Manchester Utd to set up Carabao Cup final date with Tottenham Hotspur

January 6, 2021 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Citizens breezed past their crosstown rivals to reach their fourth successive final in the competition.

Manchester City have made history by becoming the first club in this century to reach four consecutive League Cup finals following Wednesday's win over rivals Manchester United. The Citizens booked a final date with Tottenham Hotspur by putting two unanswered goals past the Red Devils at Old Trafford.

With the stakes higher this time, the night's encounter was nothing like the drab 0-0 draw that ensued when the pair met earlier this season. Both sides flaunted their attacking prowess right from kick off but were unable to produce any goal in the first half of the proceeding. No difference maker emerged until five minutes after play resumed for the second half as John Stones will hand the visitors the lead by guiding home a flicked on cross inside United's penalty box.

The game was subsequently put out of reach for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side as they struggled to get an equalizer. A poorly cleared corner by Wan-Bissaka ended up falling in the path of City skipper Fernandinho who hammered home the ball to hand his side a 2-0 lead in the 83rd minute.

In effect, Pep Guardiola side became only the second in history to reach four consecutive League Cup finals after Liverpool. The Merseysiders achieved the feat between 1981 and 1984. For Manchester United, the defeat meant that they have now been eliminated from three of their last four semi-final ties in the League Cup. They had progressed from eight of nine before that.

So far, the Red Devils have been eliminated from all four semi-finals they have featured in under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, twice in the League Cup, once in the FA Cup and once in the UEFA Europa League.
