The Citizens look to complete the group stage of the UEFA Champions League with a perfect record, but Marseille stand in their way. Will Guardiola’s side emerge triumphant? Here’s a preview of Wednesday’s encounter.

Preview – Man City vs Marseille

The sixth and final round of the UEFA Champions League group stage will see Man City take on Marseille in an Etihad Stadium showdown. After drawing 0-0 in their most recent European fixture, a trip to Porto, the Citizens will be keen on returning to winning ways and enter the knockout stage with a bang.

The last time these two sides faced off, the Citizens emerged triumphant, and by a comfortable score line, winning 3-0 on that day. Ferran Torres gave the Premier League giants a 1-0 lead early on in the game before second-half strike from Gundogan and Jesus secured all three points.

There is little left to play for other than pride. Guardiola's side have not only secured progression, but have already won their group. Furthermore, De Bruyne and Co. will be facing Man United this weekend in the always-exciting Manchester Derby, meaning Pep will have one eye on that game and will likely rotate his squad.

Nonetheless, Man City has conceded only once in the Champions League so far. Marseille, on the other hand, were on a 14-game losing streak in Europe prior to their 2-1 victory over Olympiakos a while back. The French club are bottom in their group, having conceded a whopping 10 goals while only scoring twice. The odds don't favor them but Andre-Villas Boas' side will attempt an upset against the Citizens nonetheless.

Team news

Man City: As mentioned above, Pep is expected to heavily rotate his squad. This means Phil Foden could get a start, something he has struggled to achieve in the Premier League. The Citizens have no injury concerns, meaning Sergio Aguero is fit and available after recovering from his knee discomfort, but expect Guardiola to closely manage his fitness and game time.

Marseille: Nemanja Radonjic is unavailable for the away side due to a thigh injury. Leonardo Balerdi, however, is back after seeing out his suspension.

Key stats

  • Marseille boast only one win in their last 12 trips to England (D4, L7).

  • The Citizens are looking to become the first English side to finish the group stage having conceded only once since Man United in 2010/11.

  • The Ligue 1 outfit have not won consecutive matches in this competition since 2011/12.
