Preview: Madrid vs Gladbach

Arguably, of the two sides, it's obviously hosts Real Madrid who will be under the most pressure when the all-time Champions League winners prepare to host Borussia Moenchengladbach on Wednesday evening. Although just one point separates the two sides, as things currently stand, die Fohlen are already through to the round of 16, along with, surprisingly Eastern European outfit Shakhtar Donetsk.

It's Los Blancos, the team who have won a whopping 13 Champions League titles, including becoming the first side to win three in a row in the modern era, who are actually in danger of failing to qualify for the Champions League knockout rounds for the first time since the 1994/1995 season, when they featured in the UEFA Cup.

Football indeed is quite unpredictable, but for Madrid supporters the thought of their team featuring in the Europa League probably is nothing short of a nightmare. Still, it could very well come true. Having won just two of their five Champions League games, and coming into this match off the back of a embarrassing 2-0 away loss to Shakhtar, Zinedine Zidane's men are in trouble.

To make matters worse, if Inter beat the Eastern European side, and Los Blancos lose, the Spanish giants actually could be out of European competition entirely by the time the dust settles on Wednesday evening - something that certainly would send shockwaves around the world, whether one's a Real Madrid fan or not.

Madrid's woes started early, with a shock 3-2 loss to Shakhtar, and perhaps that was a harbinger of things to come. Despite rebounding in El Clasico by beating Barcelona, they were lucky to earn a stalemate with Borussia Moenchengladbach and survived a nervy match with Inter to pick up their first victory of their Champions League campaign. Yet, despite beating the Nerazzurri both home and away, they sit in third spot due to their inexplicable losses to Shaktar - both home and on the road.

By contrast, Gladbach, who sit in seventh spot in the Bundesliga, have been quite excellent throughout their Champions League campaign. Although their four match unbeaten streak was ended as they lost 3-2 to Inter in a highly entertaining five goal thriller, they crushed Shakhtar 10-0 on aggregate to pick up six well-deserved points, and were rather unfortunate not to be able to hang on to a 2-0 lead against Real Madrid as their opponents managed to snatch two late goals for both sides to share the spoils.

Indeed, Marco Rose's side, who are hoping to reach the knockout rounds for the first time in club history, will only need a draw to progress, meaning that, again, the onus will be on Madrid to get things right at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday.
