Barca players agree terms for wage cuts

Barcelona players agree terms for massive wage cuts due to COVID-19 pandemic

November 28, 2020 By Oscar Rojas
Team members and the interim board were forced to negotiate so the club could cope with the economic problems caused by the global pandemic.

One of the big issues left to be sorted out by Barcelona's outgoing board led by Josep Maria Bartomeu was the one that had to do with the wage cuts to the first team. Los Blaugranas had suffered some big monetary losses due to the coronavirus pandemic, and now the footballers have finally agreed to take a big wage cut in order to help the club, even if they were not eager to do so when negotiations began.

According to a press release by the club, the interim board reached a deal with player agents speaking for the players that could save the club from bankruptcy, as they will be able to differ a bit over $205M on both variable payments and regular payments.

The club's statement revealed that the entire squad and their negotiators agreed to take a wage cut tjat will see the team forfeiting over $145M (around €122M) in fixed wages. Furthermore, variable payments for this season for over $59M (€50M) will be delayed for the next three years, giving the entity some breathing space in terms of their debts.

This wage situation was one of the major problems left by the former board, mainly because outgoing president Bartomeu was not willing to negotiate and wanted to take a big chunk out of each player's contract without their approval. Now, the "critical" financial situation caused by the coronavirus pandemic and by Bartomeu's woeful administration seems to be in control.
