A total of 22 soccer broadcasts made it to Showbuzzdaily's top 150 cable originals and network finals last week compared to the eight from the previous week, during the international break. Furthermore, a total of 5,750,000 viewers tuned in to the 22 games, dwarfing the mere 1,390,000 viewers who watched games the preceding week.
NBC ruled soccer viewership in the U.S. last weekend with seven Premier League broadcasts across three channels – NBC, NBC Sports Network and Universo. Its most successful broadcast was that of Tottenham’s 2-0 win over Manchester City on Saturday, garnering 875,000 viewers on NBC and 116,000 in Universo. When you combine the two broadcasts you get 991,000 average viewers, which makes up for nearly 20% of all viewership last week. NBCSN screened five other Premier League games, including the third most-watched soccer game on U.S. TV last week in Leeds United and Arsenal’s goalless draw on Sunday.
The third most-watched game on American television last week was Tigres UANL’s Liga MX playoff win over Toluca on Sunday night. The game reached a 0.25 viewership rating and averaged 543,000 viewers. TUDN had the lowest viewed game of the week, which was a Liga de Expansion MX game between Leones Negros and Correcaminos that reached 38,000 average viewers. The remaining two games were an international friendly replay of Mexico’s 3-2 win over South Korea and a live international friendly that Mexico won 2-0 against Japan on Tuesday.
Fox Deportes broadcasted two Liga MX Playoff games that reached a combined 814,000 average viewers, making it the channel’s biggest week of the year. On Saturday, Pachuca’s 3-0 away win at Santos Laguna attracted 453,000 average viewers and received a 0.20 viewership rating. On Sunday, a nail-biter between Monterrey and Puebla that went to penalties garnered 361,000 average viewers and scored a 0.18 viewership rating. On the other hand, Fox Sports 1 screened two Major League Soccer Playoff games that only reached a combined 272,000 average viewers.
Finally, Bein Sport’s broadcast of the clash between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid made it to Showbuzzdaily's top 150 cable originals and network finals list on Saturday. Seventy-five-thousand people watched Atletico Madrid defeat Barcelona in a La Liga game for the first time since Diego Simeone arrived in 2011.
