Italy will be looking to overtake Poland on top of their quartet, but the Azzurri will have to try to contain the in-form Robert Lewandowski without quite a few of their key players on the pitch. Although Roberto Mancini's men had no problems dispatching Estonia in their recent friendly, their 4-0 win came at a huge cost, as they will now have to make do without the services of defenders like Leonardo Bonucci, while skipper Giorgio Chiellini wasn't even called up due to injury issues he's still struggling with on club duty with Juventus.
The Azzurri are still unbeaten so far in 2020, but they have drawn their last two Nations League games, including a recent scoreless stalemate against their upcoming visitors. With the Netherlands hovering just one point behind, things are indeed quite tricky in this quartet, as the Oranje will be facing struggling Bosnia in the other match. Should Italy fail to pick up all three points against Poland, and the Netherlands win their game, Mancini's side could find themselves slipping down into third spot as matchday six prepares to kick off next week. The coach, meanwhile, won't even be on the bench as he himself is currently struggling with COVID-19, meaning that his assistant will have to take charge of the team for this match.
Meanwhile, Poland have lost just once so far in 2020, which was a narrow 1-0 defeat to the Netherlands back in September. Since then, they've recovered quite well, picking up two wins and a draw from their last three Nations League fixtures, which has seen them climb to top spot in their quartet ahead of this contest. The visitors come into this match having eased to a comfortable 2-0 win over Ukraine in their pre-game friendly warm-up, and notably, it marked the third straight tie that the Orly did not concede a goal following holding the Azzurri to a scoreless stalemate back in October.
Italy: The hosts have been hit with quite a few injuries ahead of this crunch tie, with veteran defenders Leonardo Bonucci and Domenico Cristico both out following the friendly with Estonia. They're also joined by West Ham defender Angelo Ogbonna, as well as young forwards Moise Kean and Pietro Pellegri. Skipper Giorgio Chiellini hasn't been called up after another injury set-back with club Juventus. Finally, PSG's Marco Verratti still remains out from last month, and Danilo D'Ambrosio is suspended.
Poland: Both Michał Karbownik and Bartłomiej Drągowski will be missing out due to COVID-19, while Artur Jędrzejczyk and Jakub Kamiński are out injured following the friendly tie with Ukraine. Mateusz Klich is suspended for this tie.
