Preview: Chelsea vs Sheffield United

Fresh off a resounding 3-0 win against Rennes in the Champions League - which has now helped them to move to top spot in their quartet - Chelsea will hope to now wrap up a successful week by beating struggling Sheffield United this weekend. Should they do this, the Blues could temporarily move just one point behind league leaders Liverpool - of course, that's until the Reds take on Manchester City in a crunch clash on Sunday.

The Blues have been in solid form lately, notably at the back, where they've kept clean sheets in their last five games across all comps, and given that Sheffield have only earned one measly point so far this season, Chelsea could certainly extend that run to six on Saturday. The London giants are unbeaten in their last five Premier League games, and although three of them were draws, they managed to avoid a third straight loss to Manchester United by holding the Red Devils to a scoreless draw and having cruised to a 3-0 win over Burnley recently, they will be expected to do the same against a floundering Sheffield United this weekend.

Although Lampard is still seeking his first consecutive pair of wins in the Premier League, his team have done very well on home turf, with just one loss in their last nine at Stamford Win, complemented by seven victories during that same period. Meanwhile, although the visiting Blades did win the most recent clash between the two sides - a 3-0 shock victory back in July - they have failed to win their last 11 games across all comps.

That includes ten alone in the league, where they've lost nine of those and have earned a measly one out of 30 during what has been a very dismal run for what has been their joint-worst start to a league campaign since the 1975/76 season - and they ended up finishing last in the table. Indeed, the last time they failed to win their first eight games of a campaign was 30 years ago, and unfortunately, with Chelsea next up on their fixture list, it seems like this record will be unfortunately matched once again this weekend.

Team news: Chelsea vs Sheffield United

Chelsea: New signing Kai Havertz recently tested positive for COVID-19 and so will be out until after the international hiatus. Meanwhile, although Kepa Arrizabalaga has seemingly recovered from a shoulder injury, given how he shipped a whopping 14 goals in his last six appearances, he's certainly not going to feature unless if new signing Eduoard Mendy is absolutely not fit to feature or suspended - and even if so, there's back up option Willy Cabellero. Christian Pulisic's hamstring injury reportedly isn't as bad as feared, but Lampard isn't likely to risk him nonetheless, and he will not be involved in this game with many more crucial fixtures coming up after the international break.

Sheffield: Ethan Ampadu is ineligible to face Chelsea as they are his parent club, while both John Fleck and Lys Mousset, despite returning to light training, aren't expected to be back in full action until after the international hiatus. Jack O'Connell is out for the long-haul.
