Preview: Leipzig vs PSG
The last time Leipzig and PSG met, it was die Bullen who ended up on the wrong end of a 3-0 score-line and were dumped out of the semi-finals of the 2019/2020 Champions League. So certainly, the ambitious club, who were only founded in 2009, will have some revenge in mind when they welcome Les Parisiens on Wednesday evening - less than three months after their first-ever European meeting.
Interestingly enough, between that debut clash and now, both teams have now since lost to Manchester United and are now sitting on four points each, having both beaten Turkish champions İstanbul Başakşehir, who are truly experiencing a baptism by fire after winning their first Super Lig title last season.
While PSG suffered a 2-1 home defeat to the Red Devils, Leipzig were utterly humiliated in a 5-0 drubbing by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's rampaging side, who made them look like absolute schoolboys in a one-sided affair. Marcus Rashford was the star of the evening as he grabbed a second half hat-trick at Old Trafford, and the 5-0 loss was the worst ever suffered by Leipzig in their young European competition history.
For PSG, their 2-1 loss to United ended a long-standing unbeaten home streak that had spanned 24 games, so this upcoming double header - the second of which will take place in Paris on November 24th - could arguably decide who finishes potentially second in this quartet and who will have to settle for third spot and feature in the Europa League next year.
Team news: Leipzig vs PSG
Leipzig: Three players are in doubt for the hosts: Tyler Adams (knee), Marcel Halstenberg (groin), and Nordi Mukiele (hamstring), while Naglesmann will have to make do without the services of Fabrice Hartmann, Lukas Klostermann, and Konrad Laimer (all due to knee injuries).
PSG: The visitors have quite a few key players out ahead of this trip, including Neymar (groin), Kylian Mbappe (major doubt due to a hamstring injury), Julian Draxler (hamstring), Juan Bernat (knee), Marco Verratti (thigh), and Mauro Icardi (thigh). The potential absence of both Neymar and Mbappe in particular is especially concerning for Tuchel, but from the hosts' perspective, they will be relieved not to have to defend against the star duo.
Match facts: Leipzig vs PSG
- Naglesmann has never beaten former mentor Tuchel in three attempts (D1, L2)
- Leipzig have played in 18 UCL ties, and have won six of them (D3, L3)
