The 2020/21 Women's UEFA Champions League first qualifying round revealed the first 20 matches of the competition Thursday, Oct. 22. The 40 teams have now been trimmed to ten teams after the first two rounds and will join the elite 22 teams that were given byes to the Round of 32. When will the 2020/21 UEFA Women's Champions League begin?

The 2020/21 UEFA Women's Champions League first qualifying round is set to start on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2020. The qualifying round will consist of 40 clubs, paired into 20 single-legged ties.

How will the 2020/21 UEFA Women's Champions League draws be decided and what are the participating teams?

A total of 62 teams from 50 different nations enter the 2020/21 UEFA Women's Champions League. There will be five draws in the entirety of the competition:

First qualifying round draw – Thursday, Oct. 22, 2020

Forty clubs are divided into ten groups of four clubs. Within the ten groups, the 40 teams are divided equally as 20 seeded teams and 20 unseeded teams. The draw consisted in each unseeded team matching up with a seeded team in each group.

The 10 victors from the first two rounds join the 22 clubs given byes to the round of 32. The round of 32 will be the first round to have home-and-away fixtures, whoch will be played on Dec. 9 and Dec. 15.

The 16 winners from the round of 32 will wait until Dec. 18 to see who they will face in the Round of 16. The round of 16 will also have home-and-away fixtures.

Quarter-final draw – Friday, March 12, 2021

The final draw of the competition scheduled for March 12, 2020, will determine the four quarterfinal matches.

Who are the UEFA Women's Champions League defending champions?

The defending champions of the UEFA Women's Champions League are seven-time European champion Olympique Lyonnais Feminin. Lyon defeated two-time UEFA Women's Champions League champion VfL Wolfsburg 3-1 on August 30, 2020, at Anoeta, San Sebastian. 

Despite Lyon winning the tournament, then Wolfsburg striker Pernille Harder was named 2019/20 UEFA Women's Player of the Year. Lyon's Wendie Renard (2nd), Lucy Bronze (3rd), Delphine Cascarino (5th), Eugenie Le Sommer (6th), Ada Hegerberg and Amel Majri (joint 7th), and Dzenifer Marozsan (10th) missed out on the award.

The final was originally set for May 24, 2020, at Viola Park in Vienna, but it was postponed due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic. The competition's quarterfinal, semifinal and final stages were held in Bilbao and San Sebastian in Spain to minimize travel in order to minimize the spread of the virus.
