Liverpool begin a new campaign in Europe with a trip to Amsterdam.

Match preview

Former European champions Liverpool will begin this season’s campaign with a trip to Ajax on Wednesday. The Reds, having defied the odds to clinch the title in the 2018/2019 season, failed to defend the title in the previous edition and will be eyeing another shot to win it once more.

Despite possessing the aura of being a dominant force in football on the continent, Jurgen Klopp’s side has been struggling to find its feet in the early days of the new season. After winning four games on a bounce, the Reds are now without a win in their last three appearances. They approach Wednesday’s clash with Ajax off the back of a 2-2 draw with Everton in the Merseyside derby.

For the hosts, scenes of their remarkable run in the 2018/2019 edition of the UEFA Champions League may be replaying in their minds ahead of this important encounter. After winning the title in 1995, it almost looked certain that they were going to have another shot at it in the final, only for them to be dealt an upset by Tottenham Hotspur in the penultimate clash.

Anew-look set-up has since been put in place, with some of the finest talents produced by the Eredivisie outfit departing for bigger clubs. Needless to say, the objective remains the same for Erik ten Hag and his subjects and they have done so with an impressive start in their domestic league so far. They are currently a point off first position after winning four and losing one of the five games they have featured in. As to whether they can keep up the momentum against Liverpool remains to be seen.

Team news Ajax

head coach Erik ten Hag confirmed to reporters both Jurrien Timber and Antony are not match-fit. Still, the Dutch outfit is expected to field a strong squad against Liverpool.

The Reds, on the other hand, go into the game without Van Dijk, Alisson, Thiago Alcantara, Joel Matip and Kostas Tsimikas. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is also absence as he is yet to recover from a lengthy spell on the sidelines. There is, however, a boost in the camp with Naby Keita returning after missing the weekend’s draw at the Goodison Park.
